Natter I\'m afraid. There\'s no need to try and add justification since the only thing that should be done is to point out why a character is a scrappy. Baby Rosalina is a scrappy due to fan fears she would cause retcons in the main Mario series. If you need to justify to ease fan fears, you can post about it on the YMMV discussion page for Mario Kart 8.

** Any baby character except Baby Mario and maybe Baby Luigi has gotten shades of this, due to all of them being similar to one another and are found as wasting too many slots. Particularly infamous is Baby Rosalina, who was made just for this game which [[{{Retcon}} jeopardizes]] [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy Rosalina's actual past self]].[[note]]Technically, they can coexist since Baby Rosalina is, well, a baby, while Rosalina's past self is a little girl. However, some fans are nonetheless worried that Nintendo will start treating Baby Rosalina as the "true" younger version of Rosalina, retconning her backstory as was revealed in ''Super Mario Galaxy''. That being said, mind you, [[NegativeContinuty the Mario games generally have no continuity whatsoever]], so this doesn't particularly matter anyway unless that suddenly changes for whatever reason. It's fairly obvious that the babies are there less because of time travel and more to do with Nintendo putting them in because they could.[[/note]]

* AndTheFandomRejoiced: The announcements for the DLC packs excited fans as much as they surprised them. Crossover cameos aside (and Nintendo throwing the F-Zero series a bone), the the fact that the sheer amount of content is about 50% of the base game for barely $13 at most was a delight for gamers who had become cynical about DLC practices. Some have argued it's the best paid DLC deal in years out of ''any'' games publisher/developer.

lots of shoehorning here. IIRC you can\'t hear other people\'s horns online, so if they bother you don\'t press them. The bit about antigravity doesn\'t matter. Killer App is not YMMV. Controversial mechanic =/= Game Breaker, a Game Breaker has to be REALLY broken..

Just some tweaks.

* BreatherLevel: ''Mario Kart 8''[='=]s Rainbow Road is this, as it is much simpler designed and obstacle light than to be expected of Rainbow Road. It's been made into something of a PostFinalBoss for the levels, while Bowser's Castle instead was made into TheVeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon.

** ''Mario Kart 64''[='=]s Rainbow Road in ''Mario Kart 8'' has a lot of the guardrails removed, making it far harder, but at the same time, you only have to go around the lengthy track once, making it shorter than the ''64'' original.

** Very few ''VideoGame/FZero'' fans were pleased when Mario Kart came and introduced the anti-gravity mechanic. They view this as a final nail in the coffin for the ''F-Zero'' series because there's no need for two racing series with anti-gravity mechanics.

** Waluigi. Many were sad when he was omitted in ''7''. But he was one of the first characters announced to be returning in ''8'', making his fans very happy.

** Upon the Super Horn's reveal, many have claimed the Spiny Shell's "tyranny" is over at long last.

I\'ve finished what I could in copying/editing in items from the Mario Kart page. Some stuff I wasn\'t sure if I needed to put them here, so I left them alone off the page.

* InternetBackdraft: ''8'' has lag in online play that if two racers finish the final section/lap neck-and-neck, the racer just closely behind will almost always get the better placement than the racer in front. One example [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsUNqxq_okM can be found here]]. Whenever this lag happens, expect those on the wrong end of the lag to rage online somewhere about being screwed over.

* MagnumOpus: Every fan of the series has their favorite installment, but ''8'' is considered to be the best in the series so far.
* MemeticBadass: After ''Mario Kart 8'' was released, Luigi is often portrayed as a merciless, hardcore racer thanks to the {{Death Glare}}s he gives [[https://i.imgur.com/I5aR4yX.gif whenever he passes someone.]] Then [[http://i.imgur.com/pyxk20o.gif this]] happened...
* MemeticMutation:
** With the reveal of Pink Gold Peach and Baby Rosalina in [=MK8=], fans have started coming up with increasingly ludicrous character variant ideas for sequels, like "[[NinjaPirateZombieRobot Baby Pink Gold]] [[VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry Funky Kong]]".
** [[https://i.imgur.com/I5aR4yX.gif Cold-blooded Luigi]]'s DeathGlare in [=MK8=]. It has mutated from there, with people trying to make nearly every single character in the game look psychotic to each racer they hit. Nintendo themselves have gotten in on it with a [[https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYMHAAACAADRUqF_5GmPMw Miiverse post]] and a [[http://youtu.be/GisRY6h100U?t=11m16s shout-out at E3.]]
* NightmareFuel: Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach having blank sclera for eyes.
* OlderThanTheyThink: While anti-gravity seems to be the selling point of ''Mario Kart 8'', ''Mario Kart DS''[='=]s Rainbow Road already had anti-gravity sections in the form of a corkscrew and a loop. Anti-gravity isn't new to kart racers either, first being featured in ''[[VideoGame/CrashTeamRacing Crash Nitro Kart]]'' back in 2003.
* ReplacementScrappy: Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach for characters like Birdo, Diddy Kong and King Boo. It doesn't help that Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach are PaletteSwaps of the other baby characters and Metal Mario.
* TheScrappy:
** Metal Mario is even considered a Scrappy to some people, because he is only a Metal version of Mario with slightly heavier stats. Some people [[MostAnnoyingSound even hate his voice]]. That being said, Japanese players love him.
** Pink Gold Peach quickly took Metal Mario's example UpToEleven, as she doesn't have a history for any of the games and is found as a cheap PaletteSwap.
** Any baby character except Baby Mario and maybe Baby Luigi has gotten shades of this, due to all of them being similar to one another and are found as wasting too many slots. Particularly infamous are Baby Daisy and Baby Rosalina, who were made just for the game with the latter [[{{Retcon}} jeopardizing]] [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy Rosalina's actual past self]].[[note]]Technically, they can coexist since Baby Rosalina is, well, a baby, while Rosalina's past self is a little girl. However, some fans are nonetheless worried that Nintendo will start treating Baby Rosalina as the "true" younger version of Rosalina, retconning her backstory as was revealed in ''Super Mario Galaxy''.[[/note]]
* ScrappyMechanic: ''Mario Kart 8'' brought the coin item back, meaning it's all too possible for someone in first place to get a useless coin item while the guy right behind them has a red shell. The coin can still appear even if the player already has 10 coins, so getting the coin item with full coins is the equivalent of getting nothing. It doesn't help that players can only hold one item now. This is especially noticeable since ''Mario Kart 7'' got rid of the Fake Item Box to prevent situations like that from happening.
* ThatOneLevel:
** Bone-Dry Dunes is already target of hate from ''Mario Kart 8'' players due to its many impossibly sharp corners, TONS of sand which slows the player down, and obstacles -- such as Dry Bones, Bone Piranha Plants and quicksands -- all over the place and put in very troubling positions.
** The game's incarnation of Bowser's Castle is also fiendishly difficult due to its back-to-back use of obstacles and its overall treacherous track design. [[BestLevelEver Not that everybody complains about it, though.]]
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks:
** In ''Mario Kart 8'', the changing of Battle Mode from arenas to full race tracks haven't gone over well with some fans. They just find these full race tracks too huge to do proper battling in and hope Creator/{{Nintendo}} adds arenas via {{DLC}}.
** The game's item mechanics were changed slightly so people couldn't [[GameBreaker "double shield"]] with items (drag an item and hold a different item in your inventory to act as a back up shield) and triple shells/peels would be used right away as revolving shields. Some fans weren't too happy with the changes.
** Some people weren't pleased with the fact that ''8''[='=]s rendition of the N64 Rainbow Road has been split into three sectioned laps like the 3DS's Rainbow Road instead of having to complete three full laps around it, in order to cut down on the track's [[MarathonLevel original length]].
* ViewerGenderConfusion: A few players unfamiliar with the Koopalings didn't realize Lemmy Koopa in ''8'' was male, due to his high pitched voice and pony-tail.
* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: ''Mario Kart 8'' is shaping up to have the most gorgeous visuals of the franchise thanks to the WiiU's improved graphics. Even racetracks from past games are almost unrecognizable from their original appearances.
* WinBackTheCrowd: Satoru Iwata believed that ''Mario Kart 8'' would be the game that helps the struggling Wii U boost in sales. [[http://www.polygon.com/2014/6/11/5801862/mario-kart-8-wii-u-sales So far it seems like it's working]].

Started up the YMMV page. I\'m still working on copying/editing in items from the main Mario Kart page.

Added DiffLines:

%%Even in {{Fanon}}, the Spiny Shell isn't a MemeticMolester. It's an ''item''. It's ThatOneAttack, and a ScrappyMechanic, but not a molester.

----
*EightPointEight: Gamespot rated it with an 8 out of 10. The review was glowing with postive-ness, but the uproar from fans happened when the reviewer docked two whole points for a poor Battle Mode and poor selection of characters when other games with the same flaws got higher scores.
* BestLevelEver: ''Mario Kart 8'' has Mount Wario, a race down a snowy mountain that feels like skiing; Electrodrome, a high tech racetrack that looks like it came from a rave party; and its incarnation of Bowser's Castle, which has a giant lava golem Bowser that punches the track so hard the track undulates. Since both the aforementioned Mount Wario and Electrodrome are in it, the Star Cup is also considered a BestLevelEver.
* BrokenBase:
** ''Mario Kart 8'' bringing back some of the controversial features from ''Mario Kart Wii'', like having twelve characters per race instead of eight and [[TierInducedScrappy the]] [[GameBreaker bikes]], have caused some people to feel uneasy. However, the concern with the bikes has been relieved somewhat when it's been revealed that they'll control more like how the karts work.
** The fact that ''Mario Kart 8''[='=]s Rainbow Road remake from ''Mario Kart 64'' is getting the same treatment as the one from the 3DS did where the track is divided into three sections instead of three laps. Sure the track is long, but the game could've done something like shorten it to two laps like they did with Wario's Colosseum from ''Double Dash!!''. Some people, however, don't mind and are happy to see it back.
** There's also the fact that Yoshi Valley now knows what place you are in. Some people are relieved to have ThatOneLevel toned down, however some are wearing NostalgiaGoggles and want it the way it used to be.
** The Rainbow Road track in ''Mario Kart 8'' is also stirring up controversy. While some people say it looks gorgeous and fun, [[StopHavingFunGuys others]] have panned it for being [[ItsShortSoItSucks too short]] and [[ItsEasySoItSucks too simplistic]] compared to previous versions, and not using enough of the anti-gravity track mechanics introduced in the game.
** One of the most controversial features about ''Mario Kart 8'' is the character roster in general. While {{Ensemble Darkhorse}}s like Toadette and Waluigi have returned to the race, the 9 new racers have left a mostly sour taste in much of the fanbase. The 7 Koopalings are {{Ensemble Darkhorse}}s themselves, but the fact that they take a '''ludicrous''' amount of slots in the 30-character roster as well as playing somewhat similarly to each other has left the base a bit broken in that regard. The more controversial racers include Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach, largely for the fact that they both contribute as {{Palette Swap}}s, making the roster have five babies that play too similarly to one another and two metallic {{Palette Swap}}s of Mario and Peach. Counting those with the seven Koopalings, they all take up almost ''half'' of the entire roster.
** The announcement of [[http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=229298 free Mercedes-Benz DLC]] for ''Mario Kart 8'' this summer ([[http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=231424 European and American confirmation here]]). This has shattered the base in numerous ways that include but are not limited to: Nintendo [[ProductPlacement selling out]] when this is not their first time [[http://www.gonintendo.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=139840#p976404 doing this]] (also some of the previous product placement [[NoExportForYou never left Japan]]), some are worried why Nintendo are doing this product placement first instead of giving Battle Mode much needed arena [=DLC=] first (also some people are worried that this product placement [=DLC=] is all we'd get for ''Mario Kart 8''), some people find real-world elements doesn't mesh well with the Mario universe, and some people view that there's nothing wrong with this product placement and that this is another case of people hating on Nintendo for no reason especially since this [=DLC is optional=].
** Very few ''VideoGame/FZero'' fans were pleased when Mario Kart came and introduced the anti-gravity mechanic. They view this as a final nail in the coffin for the ''F-Zero'' series because there's no need for two racing series with anti-gravity mechanics.
* CharacterTiers: While ''8'' retains the customization system from ''7'', about 90% of the speed stat comes solely from your character's weight.
* ComplacentGamingSyndrome: Bowser, Wario, Morton, and heavy Miis are ubiquitously used for world-record Time Trial runs in ''8'' due to having the highest speed stat. Largely averted in normal racing, where the trade-off between speed and acceleration is more balanced than it was in previous titles.
* DisappointingLastLevel: ''8''[='=]s version of Rainbow Road is getting this from many reviewers and players, since it's pretty basic by Rainbow Road standards, comes right off the heels of [[ToughActToFollow 7's version]] and doesn't make as much use of gravity mechanics as it could (being in a space station and all). Many feel the retro N64 Rainbow Road to be a more fitting finale, which oddly the game itself seems to agree with since ''that's'' the one that features prominantly at the end of the credits - though the revamped second credits sequence after Mirror Mode uses the new Rainbow Road for the final shot so this could be seen either way.
* EnsembleDarkhorse
** The Koopalings. They've been popular with fans since their introduction, and now they are all finally playable, much to the fans' delight. [[RealMenWearPink Roy]] in particular seems to be this among the fans.
** Rosalina is very popular online in ''8''. Fitting, as she's a series-wide EnsembleDarkhorse.
** Metal Mario, particularly among ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'' fans. Pink Gold Peach isn't so lucky in this regard.
* FunnyAneurysmMoment: After the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, the use of Bob-ombs (bombs) in a race is suddenly a bit dark. Also, if a bombing of an airport occurs, it will make you think twice about using the item in Sunshine Airport from ''8.''
* GameBreaker: There is a special technique called "fire hopping": after unleashing a mini-turbo, simply hopping a few times would cause the mini-turbo to last longer than usual. It is a technique so common-placed that fans are arguing whether it should be patched or not.
* GeniusBonus: Pink Gold Peach's name seems really odd at first, but pink gold is actually real. It's an alloy of gold and copper.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Remember ''Sugar Rush'' from ''Disney/WreckItRalph'' and how it parodied this game in conjunction with a sweets motif? A year later, one of the new courses in ''8'' is Sweet Sweet Canyon. Funny coincidence neh?
** This [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcrY191NaYQ Dorkly]] video is about the Koopalings (specifically Larry) hating spending time with Bowser because all they do is [[SuperMarioBros3 guard airships and get beaten up by Mario]]. During the argument, Bowser says that "he can be a fun guy who takes them to go-kart races" but Larry says that Bowser only takes Bowser Jr to those. Guess who's in Mario Kart 8 and who isn't?
* InternetBackdraft: ''8'' has lag in online play that if two racers finish the final section/lap neck-and-neck, the racer just closely behind will almost always get the better placement than the racer in front. One example [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsUNqxq_okM can be found here]]. Whenever this lag happens, expect those on the wrong end of the lag to rage online somewhere about being screwed over.
