** Since the games never explore Majima's past prior to the Ueno Seiwa hit (which happened when Majima was 21), many fics take the time to come up with all kinds of backstories about his childhood and teenage years. A particularly common one is his father being Yakuza or having an AlcoholicParent.

Added DiffLines:

* MemeticPersonalityChange: Overlapping with AdaptationalGenderIdentity, a very large part of fandom interprets Majima as being genderfluid because of the ''VideoGame/YakuzaKiwami'' encounter where he hides in a bar as a hostess named Goromi. In the series this is an one-off gag as part of Majima's many disguises to get a drop on Kiryu, but fandom likes to think that Majima really is questioning his gender identity.

* FandomSpecificPlot:
** The most obvious WhatIf scenario is Kiryu choosing to [[spoiler:stay as the Tojo's fourth Chairman at the end of ''VideoGame/Yakuza1'']]. Such fics usually focus on how Kiryu's psyche and relationships are affected by this decision, and more often than not in them he [[spoiler:ends up leaving the Yakuza anyway]].
** One particular brand of Kiryu and Majima shipping fics has the two of them meet during the TimeSkip between ''VideoGame/Yakuza0'' and the beginning of ''VideoGame/Yakuza1''. In those either they get stuck on a mission together, or Majima starts hounding Kiryu "Majima Everywhere" style.
** There are two distinct brands of Majima and Makoto shipping fics:
*** She goes looking for him after ''Yakuza 0'' by contacting all the other people she encountered during the game. In those fics she never develops feelings for her canonical husband.
*** Usually taking place during - or around the time of - Majima's portion of ''VideoGame/YakuzaKiwami2'', Makoto has some kind of major falling out with her husband that ends with the two getting divorced. While such fics rarely portray the husband as a monster, they focus on the fact that Makoto canonically keeps her entire DarkAndTroubledPast a secret from him (and how such things can destroy a relationship), and they invent some kind of deal-breaking flaw for the husband, such as being emotionally detached, controlling, or maybe even cheating. It's after or during this break-up that she goes looking for Majima, though how she realizes that's him varries.
** "[[spoiler:Nishiki]] lives" plots are far from unheard of. A good chunk of such fics shows him somehow surving [[spoiler:the explosion that]] kills him in canon with horrific injuries (typically of the AnArmAndALeg variety), and his ensuing emotional struggles.

* QuestionableCasting: Creator/YongYea replacing Darryl Kurylo as Kiryu starting with ''Gaiden'' was met with skepticism for a number of reasons. Once the games featuring his voice work were released, the consensus was that, while he was able to properly convey emotion for many scenes, he sounded far too young for a tough chain-smoking character who was in his mid-50s. This is made especially apparent when compared to both Kurylo and Creator/TakayaKuroda's portayals, and other voice actors, notably Jake Eberle (Hanawa) and Tim Friedlander (Daigo), whose voices were closer to what fans were hoping Kiryu would sound in English.

* PolishedPort: Say what you will about the individual games being ported to various systems, especially some of the [[PortingDisaster early PC ports]], a big appeal of the series in later entries are some of the emulated arcade games you can find at Club Sega and other assorted locations, including ''VideoGame/SonicTheFighters'', ''VideoGame/FightingVipers'', ''[[VideoGame/VirtuaFighter Virtua Fighter 2 and 5: Final Showdown]]'', ''VideoGame/FantasyZone'', ''VideoGame/OutRun'', ''VideoGame/SpaceHarrier'' and more, rarely with any notable issues and always as their less-distributed arcade versions rather than the home console ports. For many people, simply owning installments in the franchise for the extra arcade titles they bring to the table is a selling point.

* ScrappyMechanic: The ability to sprint in the games from ''Yakuza 0'' to ''Yakuza 2: Kiwami''. The need to button mash to get the fastest speed is already problematic, but on top of that characters will tire out relatively quickly, resulting in them completely stopping to catch their breath the moment you stop running. ''Judgement'' thankfully switched to having unlimited sprint and tying it to simply holding down the button, making things much easier and less tedious.

*** For that matter, Kiryu's continued presence in the series post-''Yakuza 6''. While it was generally well received when he [[spoiler: showed up in ''Like A Dragon'' to pass the torch to the next generation and serve as a DuelingPlayerCharacters SuperBoss]], the announcement that he would not only become a party member in ''Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth'' but receive his own Interquel spinoff title in ''Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Forgot His Name'' introduced a schism in the fanbase between those who were happy to have the popular character as a continued presence in the series and those who bemoaned the series seeming inability to let go of the past after what seemed like a natural endpoint to the man's story, and worry about him serving as a one-man SpotlightStealingSquad from new series protagonist Ichiban.

Such a mainstay, in fact, that its become a point of ridicule how often its played during moments that are often cliché and overly sentimental. Any long-term fan of the series will more likely be laughing or rolling their eyes when the track starts to play, as opposed to the intended feeling of sadness.
