* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: When Kubo's mother emphatically tells him to never let his grandfather or sisters find him, she warns that they will take her away from her. It almost seems similar to a scenario where a mother's trying to keep her child to herself and avoid a custody battle she know she'll lose. Given Sariatu's comatose state during the day, this wouldn't be too far off in modern day.

Sariatu is not wrong about them being monsters, but at the same time, they're obviously crushed about their sister's betrayal, and do genuinely believe what's best for Kubo, [[BlueAndOrangeMorality albeit from a completely alien point of view.]] [[spoiler:The fact they don't get a redemption like their father doesn't help.]]

* EsotericHappyEnding: While the film clearly has a BittersweetEnding with [[spoiler:both of Kubo's parents now dead]] it's still supposed to lean toward the sweeter side with [[spoiler:Kubo being adopted by his now-amnesiac grandfather and Kameyo.]] Except that [[spoiler:Kubo reformed his grandfather by putting his other eye in him, which erased all his memories to transform him from the Moon King into a human and become better person which seems to contradict the film's message]], and there's nothing that states that [[spoiler:if anything happened to Kubo's other eye, his grandfather wouldn't transform back into the Moon King. And if he did, there's no reason why he wouldn't want to kill all the villagers for what happened, especially since everything the villagers told him about being a good person were just lies and don't have any validity to them, so they wouldn't be important to him. Worst case scenario, the villagers may left themselves with a proverbial ticking time bomb in their town.]]

* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Watch almost every single effect, from the minor character movements to the intense action scenes. Now try to remind yourself that it's all stop-motion.

* AcclaimedFlop: The movie was universally praised upon it's release, and was a box office bomb. It only just managed to make back it's 60 million dollar budget, though it's currently standing at 70 million.

* CaptainObviousReveal: The twist that [[spoiler: Monkey and Beetle were Kubo's parents the whole time]] isn't exactly hard to see coming, especially once [[spoiler: they start bickering LikeAnOldMarriedCouple. The fact that Creator/CharlizeTheron voices both Monkey and Sariatu also contributes to this, and additionally suggests that the creators thought it was so obvious that Monkey's identity wasn't worth even trying to hide.]]

* AcclaimedFlop: Sadly given the artistry on display, but this film did pretty badly at the box office.

* AngstWhatAngst: Just one day after apparently losing his mother and his entire village, Kubu is surprisingly chipper, playing around with his magic to make the flock of origami birds. Granted, it turned out that neither the townsfolk nor his mother were really actually dead at that point, but he didn't know that at the time.

* NightmareFuel: It's bad enough when darkness falls and one of the sisters appears, hovering over the surface of the lake and making ominous statements about hunting for Kubo. And then you realise that there are TWO of them...
