* ReplacementScrappy: [[spoiler: Killian]] taking the spot of the BigBad from the [[spoiler: fake Mandarin]] halfway through the movie was not well received.

* UnfortunateImplications: For as hard as the filmmakers worked to make sure the Mandarin's identity wouldn't offend anyone, it never seemed to occur to them that his henchmen all being disabled U.S. Military veterans, empowered by Extremis, who eagerly and willingly carry out terrorist attacks against their fellow Americans and even [[spoiler: attempt to assassinate the U.S. President]] just might be '''extremely''' offensive to a lot of people. This did not go unnoticed by [[http://spoonyexperiment.com/vlogs/iron-man-3/ Noah Antwiler of The Spoony Experiment]].

* CaptainObviousReveal: [[spoiler:It's not particularly difficult for a GenreSavvy viewer to guess that Killian is the real Mandarin (or, at the very least, that something is off with the whole "Mandarin" thing). The film spends a lot more time on Killian than Ben Kingsley's Mandarin, with the former being established as a villain fairly early on and the latter not actually getting that much focus, and mostly just dropping by in the middle of everything else that's going on to say he's committing acts of terrorism. By the time Trevor is unmasked, a reasonable person may very well make the obvious guess that Killian is the real mastermind, which is exactly what happens.]]

** He is arguably an even closer expy of Edward Nygma / The Riddler from ''Film/BatmanForever'', seeing as how both began as nerds (with near-identical glasses and hair, even) who turned to evil after the billionaire genius (but not their superhero alter-ego) they admired brushed them off in one meeting, but only ''really'' go off the deep end once they gain superpowers (SuperIntelligence via stealing brainwaves, in Nygma's case), after which they become wealthy and vengeful rivals to their former idol. Both also are attracted to the lead girl [[spoiler:but hold her hostage at the end to get at the hero]].

** Related to [[spoiler:the Mandarin twist]], there is the question of whether or not the Mandarin should be depicted ''at all'' in an ''Iron Man'' movie: those who defend it argue that it wouldn't fit the realistic, tech-oriented tone and theme of the movies to suddenly introduce as villain as surreal as a YellowPeril [[TouchedByVorlons alien-powered]] EvilSorcerer. Meanwhile, those who disliked it tend to point out the "we need to keep it realistic" argument doesn't work anymore when [[Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse the universe these movies take place in]] is confirmed to have things such as [[Film/TheAvengers2012 aliens]], [[Film/{{Thor}} beings from Norse Mythology]] and [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy a cyborg talking racoon with a rocket launcher]].

** The destruction of [[spoiler:all Tony's suits and the removal of his ARC reactor]] at the end. Some feel it's a sign of how much Tony has matured since he first put on the suit. Others see it as a needless de-powering of a hero and are upset at the implication that he won't be Iron Man anymore.
*** Bit of a moot point since ''Age of Ultron'' revealed that he built more suits and is still Iron Man.

** Tony daring the Mandarin to attack him can be understood with the emotional strain he was under. Not so much his sitting and waiting for the attack afterwards as he turns out to have no real plan ready for it. At the very least, he could have gotten Pepper out of harm's way.

Not so much his sitting and waiting for the attack afterwards as he turns out to have no real plan ready for it. Even when Pepper makes reasonable argument for leaving their home for safety, Tony argues that staying home, that has now been made a bullseye for a dangerous terrorist ogranization, with no apparent security systems (you know, aside [[spoiler:those dozens of Iron Man armors in the basement]]) and simply wait for an attack to happen. [[IdiotBall Just one of the main factors of the entire plot for this movie seems to be that Tony is completely arrogant meatbrain.]]

* BrokenBase: The movie could write books on how much it divided people, and is easily the most divisive film of the MCU thus far.
