* ValuesDissonance: In both the ''Gamemasters Guide'' and ''Pleasures Of The Flesh'', the game describes a darker version of Andrealphus, Prince of Lust, as being an advocate of rape, pedophilia, snuff films...and BDSM. As kink has become more accepted and mainstream, this comes off far more as an offensive case of ArsonMurderAndJaywalking then an indication of the worst parts of sexuality.

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Only supported by the game, with advice given on doing so. The Gamemaster's Guide includes alternate portrayals for each of the Superiors, with each one having a version that's a black-hearted monster, a compassionate hero or a wacky buffoon, as well as alternate views for the entire conflict between heaven and hell. Later books, especially later superior books, only added more possible interpretations.

* {{Anvilicious}}: Mass media is the work of Hell. This is softened in later supplements; while the Demon Prince of the Media has immense power, the Archangel of Revelation has some Servitors whose Words relate to Objective Journalism, Investigative Journalism, and the like. It's also noted in ''Superiors 2: Pleasures of the Flesh'' that the Media has sometimes grown in ways that its Prince doesn't expect or control (but still takes credit for).

* FoeYay: Lilim tend to find Malakim inexplicably beautiful, possibly due to tropes like TallDarkAndHandsome and AllGirlsWantBadBoys. (Malakim want Lilim dead like any other demon.)

* GrowingTheBeard: The game really comes into its own once it sheds the dark parody roots of the French source and becomes a more subtle nuanced take on the concept of a Cold War between Heaven and Hell, starting around the Infernal Players Guide supplement (which was shortly after Elizabeth [=McCoy=] became Line Editor).

Dominic may be an ineffectual nanny, an uncompromising tyrant, an outright Balseraph in disguise, or the smartest, most clear-eyed person in Heaven. Yves may be a secret mastermind, a doddering old man, or God in a GeorgeBurns costume. Lucifer, Valefor, Alaemon, and/or Kobal may be working for God. Valefor might actually ''be'' Lucifer. Or Valefor (a Demon Prince) and Janus (an Archangel) might be ''the same person''. And in the French game, you can remove the latter "might". He is also Hermes.
** The GM's Guide has options for giving ''the entire game'' an AlternateCharacterInterpretation. 'Backwards' has the angels all being KnightTemplar fanatics and the demons being heroic rebels. 'Dark Low Contrast' is basically doing it Garth Ennis style, where [[CrapsackWorld both sides just plain suck]]. '''Bright'' Low Contrast' is when you play the game strictly for the sitcom value and neither side's really evil at all.
