* DoNotDoThisCoolThing: The ''Dreadnought''-type starship was first posited in the ''Starfleet Technical Manual'' for The Original Series. Even the name ''Star Empire'' was one of the noted names for Starfleet Dreadnoughts. The novel ''Dreadnought!'' is pretty much the only place they've appeared aside from ''TabletopGame/StarfleetBattles'', and thus is a main source of their popularity within a segment of the ''Star Trek'' fandom. . . and yet the ''entire point'' of the book is that the Federation has no reason to build ships like this unless they're planning bloody conquest, which exactly what the Federation is '''not'''.

** Klingon disruptors in the books. They have five settings: A light stun which leaves the target dazed, a heavy stun which knocks them out for quite some time, an even heavier stun, a basic kill, and a "kill while disintegrating painfully." Oh, and that "stun" setting in the middle? it's ''technically'' a stun setting, but promotes necrosis of tissue in the victim, essentially rotting them. It's a "stun" setting, but the victim isn't meant to live very long after being shot. Piper has to clarify when she tells her pals with captured Klingon disruptors to set for "heavy stun" that she means setting two, not three.

not a trope

* JustForFun/ComeForTheXStayForTheY: Come for the novelty of first-person storytelling in the ''Franchise/StarTrek'' universe, stay for the surprisingly well-written heroine and her cohorts, the political intrigues, the thrilling space battles, and the information about the then-canon fluff of Starfleet's inner workings.

* MarySue: It's easy to interpret Piper as one given the nature of the books. However, she {{subvert|edTrope}}s the general nature of the concept by having noticeable (and at times glaring) flaws and by Kirk always being at least one step ahead of her in the progression of the books' plots. Diane Carey is on record as stating that Piper is a Sue, but in [[http://www.dianecareyauthor.com/the-dreadnought-and-i/ a blog post]], she said that Pocket Books loved the character so much that they were willing to ignore their own rules about not publishing first-person works, which proved to be a smart choice when ''Dreadnought!'' quickly became a best-seller.

technically she is one, but it may be best to work that into another trope entry
