** The newly announced Phoenix Mode (where characters who die can be resurrected on that very map) and the removal of weapon durability limits has made some fans of the older games ''quite'' angry (the rest have taken the series' long history as a good sign the devs aren't totally incompetent and that there's probably a justification for it not yet announced). Never mind that the latter was available in ''Gaiden'' and more or less existed in Seisen No Keifu, possibly the most beloved Fire Emblem game ever made. As well as the former being optional.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: For those who took issue with the story and tone of ''Awakening'', reception to the announcement of ''Fates'' has been very positive and hopeful, as the creators seem to be working to keep that game's core gameplay intact, but adding depth and nuance to the storytelling.
** Some fans were concerned that improving [=MyCastle=] through connecting to other games could only be done with [=StreetPass=], which is somewhat unwieldy and useless for those living in an isolated area. They were quite pleased when [=IntSys=] announced that you could meet with other players through the Internet as well.
** The Pair Up feature from ''Awakening'' was seen by a significant portion of the fanbase as making the game far too easy. As it turns out, the whole system has been reworked, both to allow enemies to use it and to spread its benefits into a StanceSystem.
* AmericansHateTingle: Several of the characters announced so far are rather blatant [[{{Expy}} Expies]] of [[EnsembleDarkhorse Awakening's second-gen kids]], right down to ''looking exactly like them.'' To say that Western fans are displeased is an understatement. It's especially blatant since the one of first of such characters to be revealed (and possibly the most blatant), Luna, is an expy of Severa, the second-gen kid who already suffers from this the most. At best, people react by relentlessly joking about the similarity.
* BrokenBase:
** During this game's initial announcement, there was very, very little information on ''VideoGame/ShinMegamiTenseiXFireEmblem'' since its initial reveal in early 2013, making fans who were looking forward to the crossover a bit miffed, afraid the game might have fallen into DevelopmentHell or, even worse, cancelled. Eventually, the April 1, 2015 Nintendo Direct finally showed a full trailer from ''SMT x FE'', alongside the second trailer for ''Fates''.
** The fact that there are [[http://serenesforest.net/2015/04/01/fire-emblem-april-2015-information/ two separate versions of the game, each with its own story]] has understandably caused some debate. Intelligent Systems state that each version will be different in story/style enough and big enough to justify the split, but some people have a hard time believing that, and think that this is Nintendo doing all they can to nickle and dime consumers and intentionally withholding content that should all be together. Others argue that that Nintendo has a pretty good record with worthy DLC, so they deserve at the very least the benefit of the doubt. Especially considering there's a very similar precedent in the Nintendo francises with the [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOracleGames Oracle games from the Zelda franchise]], and to a lesser extent, [[VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite the Generation 5]] [[VideoGame/PokemonBlack2AndWhite2 games of Pokémon]]. Interestingly, while the game was a part of every direct, only Japan was told about the split in versions, which may mean Westerners may just get everything in one cartridge anyway.
** Developer interviews appear to confirm the split into two games was partially due to the BrokenBase caused by ''Awakening'' (the other, primary reason behind the split being influenced by the Arran/Samson dilemma from the first game), with Hoshido aimed at those who liked Awakening and Nohr aimed at those who disliked it.
** The May 31st Direct included a ''lot'' of info that split the fanbase in half. Some people think that being able to walk around towns is a cute call-back to ''Gaiden''; others hate it. Some people like the [=MyCastle=] feature; others think it'll be abused to grind weapons/experience/gold and break the game. And let's not even get into the whole "hot springs" and "face-rubbing" mechanics...
** Some of the female character designs are becoming divisive due to their incorporating more {{Fanservice}} than the previous installments - namely, Charlotte and Camilla's. The major part of the women on either side are dressed rather sensibly (i.e, Hinoka's BreastPlate does ''not'' have the "boob shape" that the ''Awakening'' Pegasus Knights had), but [[NeverLiveItDown that tends to be forgotten by the fans]].
** The fact that ''Awakening's'' Severa is getting a direct {{Expy}} in Luna has rubbed some western fans the wrong way, since Severa was one of ''Awakening's'' biggest cases of AmericansHateTingle. (One of the most popular 2nd generation characters in Japan, but extremely divisive in the west due to the localization emphasising the "jerk" part of her JerkWithAHeartOfGold a little too much, as well as being a textbook {{Tsundere}} when tsundere characters are becoming less popular in the west than they are in Japan.)
** Similarly to Luna above, the fact that there are two other [[{{Expy}} Expies]] of ''Awakening'''s Inigo and Owain has soured some fans on the characters, viewing them as nothing more than PanderingToTheBase due to how Inigo, Owain and Severa were three of the most popular "future child" characters in ''Awakening'' by fan vote.
* CulturalPosturing: Toyed with. Of the two factions in the Japanese-made game, the Japanese-inspired Hoshido are peace-loving and only trying to defend themselves from the invasion of the warlike, ambitious, and obviously European-inspired Nohr. Likewise, some of the Nohr character designs (specially some of the female ones) seem intended to invoke the SensibleHeroesSkimpyVillains trope. This has caused some to accuse the game of a revisionist narrative regarding Japan's own warlike past or insinuating that the Japanese are superior to Western society. On the other hand, ignoring the very ObviouslyEvil Garon, the Nohr characters that have been revealed don't seem particularly malevolent: Kamui's Nohr little sister Elise seems very sweet, Marx at one point in the first trailer seems truly horrified at something Garon's done, and MsFanservice Camilla in one shot in the second trailer shows very genuine concern for Kamui's wellbeing, and is as sad as Elise and Marx when the two armies are face to face. Furthermore, their story will apparently revolve around reforming the nation from within rather than providing a straightforward "evil campaign."
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Aqua, the blue-haired dancer girl and secondary protagonist. Within ''two hours'' of the trailer's release, the fanart was already flowing.
** The day the video regarding the two factions came out, Camilla quickly became [[http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/941433-fire-emblem a common argument for joining Nohr]]. Interestingly, this began to wane a bit after we got to hear more about the siblings of each side as the rest of the Nohrian family grew in popularity. She's still very popular though, thanks in part to being portrayed as a CoolBigSis to Kamui.
** Tsubaki has become this, solely due to the reason that it would appear he is a male Pegasus Knight, something the series has never had be playable before, as well as having been a popular request for some time.
** A lot of fans love Marx for being a [[CoolBigSis Cool Big Bro]] with a sense of honor who genuinely loves Kamui, as seen by the genuine sadness he shows if Kamui turns on Nohr.
** 'Book Bro' (FanNickname for Leon, who was unnamed at the time) has become this after the second trailer. See MemeticBadass.
** Both Elise ''and'' Sakura have gotten a lot of popularity for both being {{Little Sister Heroine}}s. Many fans expect either one of them [[BreakTheCutie to break completely]] in chapter 6 when the player has to make a decision on which side to join. See MemeticMutation below.
** Rinka has become quite popular for her rather [[AmazonianBeauty stunning figure]].
** [[BattleButler Joker]] is also very popular, particularly helped by his [[Creator/JunichiSuwabe voice actor]]. His appearance in the My Castle explanation video made a lot of people... [[ArousedByTheirVoice very pleased]].
** Kazahana's BadassAdorable appeal has netted her several fans.
* EvilIsCool: Nohr's portrayal as the more morally-ambiguous faction certainly didn't harm its popularity, especially among earlier fans of the series who are drawn to its promises of difficulty.
* FanPreferredCouple: Going by polls and fanart, fans are shipping Male!Kamui with [[BirdsOfAFeather Aqua]], [[CoolBigSis Camilla]], [[ActionGirl Kazahana]], and [[LittleSisterHeroine Elise]]; Female!Kamui tends to be paired with [[NotBloodSiblings Marx]], [[BattleButler Joker]], [[ChildhoodFriend Cyrus]], and sometimes [[LesYay Aqua]] as well.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: Right from the start, Nohr was the significantly better-received faction in the West. For some it died down when several [[EnsembleDarkhorse very well-received characters and designs]] were revealed for Hoshido as more than one BaseBreaker was shown off on Nohr's side, but the popularity discrepancy is still there to an extent.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** On the subject of the above-mentioned ''Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem'', ''Shin Megami Tensei'' also had a game that [[VideoGame/ShinMegamiTenseiIf used "if" as its subtitle]]. It also happens to be one of the games that were featured in ''[=SMTxFE=]'''s original reveal. One has to wonder if the creative teams behind the games have been planning it all out as a joke for years.
** "[[MemeticMutation Feet confirmed]]!" And then [[http://static1.gamespot.com/uploads/original/1534/15343359/2839784-screen+shot+2015-04-01+at+3.37.26+pm+(2).png the protagonists' artwork]] shows that they [[DoesNotLikeShoes will not be wearing any shoes.]]
* HoYay: A new feature in the game lets Kamui call up members of your army into your room so that you can... rub and pat them to raise affinity, a la Pokemon gen 6, or the Project Diva games (but with more blushing). You can do this as either gender, to either gender. And seeing how rubbing someone of the same gender is pretty much [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar the most homosexual thing one could do without getting outright sexual]], many are seeing this as a sign that same-sex pairings are being introduced, at least for [[AnythingThatMoves Kamui.]]
* IKnewIt: After Nishiki's reveal, people began guessing that Nohr would have a faction-specific shapeshifter that was a wolf. In the "introduction" trailer, there's a glimpse of a man turning into a bear-wolf-thing, causing this reaction.
* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: Some ''Fire Emblem'' fans, mainly those who disliked ''Awakening'', have accused the initial reveal trailer of this, as the game features the same artstyle and looks to be fairly similar in gameplay mechanics, much like the relationship of the UsefulNotes/GameBoyAdvance entries in the series.
** Then it was revealed that the two routes will have two different playstyles, in order to accomodate both sides of the fan debate.
* MemeticBadass: Prince Leon aka 'Book Bro', due to being shown using what appears to be very powerful magic in the second trailer.
** Kazahana became one after the reveal of her personal skill (when the user kills an enemy, all adjacent enemies lose 20% of their HP) and her PervertRevengeMode on the Avatar in the My Castle trailer. One user on serenesforest has even said she'll be "the second coming of [[FireEmblemTellius Mia]]".
* MemeticMolester: The May 31st Direct unveiled a new feature where Kamui can call people to his/her room and ''rub their face'', immediately landing them this label among the fanbase.
* MemeticMutation:
** The units in ''Fates'' have actual, visible feet, rather than the bizarre hooves characters had in ''Awakening''. This has prompted a wave of posts among the likes of "[[Memes/SuperSmashBros Feet confirmed]]!" To take it further, the protagonist DoesNotLikeShoes, emphasizing the prominince of feet.
*** And due to the way feet are drawn in official artwork, many have began claiming that the female Avatar has two left feet. [[HilariousInHindsight Aqua's official artwork has her bare right foot hidden behind her bare left one, possibly because of the female Avatar's alleged two-left-feet error.]]
*** Another foot-related joke is the idea of choosing sides based on what kind of footwear each side has. The player character and Aqua [[TakeAThirdOption decide to not choose either side]] and go barefoot.
** With the second reveal trailer showing the Nohr side includes a woman named Camilla with...[[AbsoluteCleavage noticeable assets]], "I pick Nohr for boobs" has become a common rallying cry.
*** Camilla as a whole has become memetic on GameFAQs, with the vast majority of Topics in the Nohr version's board (Which even most of the people siding with Hoshido use) being related to her in some way or form.
** Also, BLOODLINE v. LOYALTY for the two opposing factions.
*** Loyalty becoming an UnusualEuphemism for breasts, due to Camilla's GagBoobs.
** People expressing confusion on who they can S-Rank with, since the Hoshido and Nohr sides have your blood and adopted families, respectively.
** Within minutes of the reveal that Book Bro's name was Leon, Nohr has become the land of communism for the fanbase (due to (Karl) Marx and Leon (Trotsky)). Thus, many fans are planning to name their Nohr-route MU Josef or Vladimir, or speculation that the young troubadour's name will be something like Frida or Anastasia to keep up the theme... right up until said "troubadour" was revealed to be a Rod Knight named Elise.
** "Oniichan!" "Niisama..." [[labelnote:Explanation]]For many, the debate of Nohr versus Hoshido isn't about which side is right. It isn't even about which game's gameplay they'll like better. It's about [[LittleSisterHeroine which adorable little sister]] [[PlayerPunch they can emotionally survive]] [[BreakTheCutie breaking the heart of.]][[/labelnote]]
** During a Famitsu reveal (that also revealed the [[BattleButler Butler class]]), Gunter's Great Knight class was misread by some sources as "Great Butler", which immidiately went memetic.
** Many fans have noticed similarities in design between Harold and [[Disney/BeautyAndTheBeast Gaston]], to the point where he has been [[FanNickname nicknamed]] "Blonde Gaston". This comparison has also led to images like [[http://i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/966/823/18f.jpg this]] being made.
*** Speaking of Harold, a few people noticed that his costume seems quite reminiscent of [[ComicBook/CaptainAmerica Captain America]]... [[http://samven.tumblr.com/post/120130726401/why-is-no-one-talking-about-the-fact-that-this which, combined with the aforementioned realisation, led to them calling him]] "Gaston America".
*** And adding on to the list of Western characters Harold reminds the fandom of: [[http://princesstikal.tumblr.com/post/120066555228/mikey-hunter-princesstikal-harold-looks-like Zapp Brannigan]].
** Kamui's dragon form has generated quite a fair amount of memes. For example, some people think it looks like a cross between [[VideoGame/PokemonDiamondAndPearl Dialga]] and [[VideoGame/PokemonXAndY Xerneas]]. Cue the Pokémon cracks.
*** Going off the above, there are people saying that not only is Kamui a Pokémon, [[http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=54466 Aqua is their trainer but doesn't have enough badges to control them]], and that's why they attack her.
*** After the 30 second commercial showed Aqua getting strangled by dragon!Kamui a ''second'' time, people who shipped them [[http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=54473&page=2 started making jokes]] about them liking it rough and the PowerPerversionPotential of shapeshifting.
** The Capture mechanic has raised a few memes due to the characters in charge of taking enemy prisoners. On the Hoshido side, we have Orochi who apparently uses her, um, "questionable" persuasion techniques and her "assets" to get enemy soldiers to join your side. On the Nohr side, we have Zero in charge, a sadistic man with an eyepatch, leading to much speculation that his "persuasion" techniques are simply torture by another name.
* NeverLiveItDown: The fandom has exaggerated the ''actual'' quantity of skimpy-dressed female characters. While there ''is'' quite a bit more {{Fanservice}} than in other FE titles, out of the rather large female cast... only three Nohrian women (Charlotte, Camilla and to a lesser degree Nyx) and two Hoshidan girls (Rinka and Orochi) are super fanservicey, while all the other women on either country are dressed in far more sensible and/or practical ways, and additionally two [[MissFanservice Misses Fanservice]] have ''somewhat'' of in-character reasons to dress the way they do [[note]](Charlotte is a GenreSavvy GoldDigger who [[BitchInSheepsClothing uses her cute looks to draw men in so they will spoil her]], while Orochi is in charge of the "Capture" mechanic in Hoshido and probably uses her looks as well to make things easier ''and'' is implied to be kind of a tease anyway)[[/note]].
* NotSoDifferent: The alternate interpretation of the conflict between the Hoshido and Nohr. See the entry on CulturalPosturing above.
* PanderingToTheBase:
** Both routes of the game seem to be going for this, as the Hoshido route is designed to be more accommodating to newcomers with its style being similar to ''Awakening'' (which attracted many new fans to the series), and the Nohr route is being tailored to be more challenging in order to appeal to the fans of the earlier games that felt alienated by ''Awakening's'' changes to the series' core formula.
** The inclusion of characters who are blatant [[{{Expy}} Expies]] of ''Awakening'''s Severa, Inigo and Owain, due to their popularity. See BrokenBase and AmericansHateTingle above to see how that's turned out so far.
* RootingForTheEmpire: While the game has not been launched yet, most of the fanbase so far seem to want to side with Nohr, due to either the gameplay of the Nohr route being more reminiscent of the earlier games in the series or the presence of [[EvilIsSexy Cami]][[AntiVillain lla]] and [[BadassFamily all of the protagonists other adopted siblings]]. Plus, they have the whole 'Conquistador' look going for their troops, and Fire Emblem has not had an 'evil' campaign before.
* ScapegoatCreator: Some [[http://ultracrystallize.tumblr.com/post/120699347420/also-to-note-that-kozaki-yusuke-doesnt-draw-the has been constantly rallying and whining]] against character designer Yusuke Kozaki, showing their lack of knowledge about the character design process and ignoring [[WordOfGod Kozaki's own words]] [[http://gaming.moe/?p=162 about the matter as a whole.]]
* TheScrappy: Charlotte is already starting to become this, with many fans disliking her for her blatant {{Fanservice}}, her BitchInSheepsClothing GoldDigger personality or both.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: There was a raging debate as to whether Tsubaki's gender. It's a GenderBlenderName, and they definitely look like they could pass for {{Bishounen}}, but they're a Pegasus Knight, a class which, with the exception of some nameless enemy units in the older games, has been exclusively female. It has also been confirmed that Pegasus Knights have been replaced with Pegasus Warriors, which is the same class but removes the female only requirement, allowing for male Pegasus Warriors. The debate finally ended when the My Castle trailer showed Tsubaki very clearly in a male hot spring, confirming he is in fact male.
** This appears to be common with the more traditional Japanese designs of the Hoshido characters. Besides Tsubaki, Tsukuyomi, Oboro and even Hinata have sparked debates about which gender they are.
