* FanDumb: Hoo boy. From people declaring it the Best Game Ever despite technological, storytelling efforts, and translation being better in many other games from both the same and other series, to the incredible {{Shipping}} wars that rage to this day, the Fan Dumb is strong with this one.

* HateDumb: The HypeBacklash below goes a [[{{Understatement}} wee bit]] too far at times.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny - The game created, popularized, or deconstructed many RPG tropes and conventions that see popular use today, but people who weren't there to experience the game at launch tend to see it as a dated ClicheStorm.
* SequelDisplacement - While obviously nobody thinks that the ''seventh'' game in the series is the first, since the wider distribution and promotion of the title compared to previous entries (as well as its status as the first high profile JRPG on the Playstation) means that many, many fans of the series played this game first and define the series by this game. It didn't help in Europe, where it ''was'' the first mainline Final Fantasy to be released there. Not shockingly, there's still a group of series fans that consider this game inferior to all the games that came before it entirely because ItsPopularNowItSucks[[hottip:*: or HypeBacklash]]...neglecting how many of ''them'' started playing at the similarly more popular and well-promoted ''FinalFantasyVI''.

** In the original game Hojo is presented as a calm and calculating individual, but as time goes on his insanity seeps through and he goes off the deep end at the end of the game. [[spoiler:In ''{{Dirge of Cerberus}}'' he's reduced to a nasally nutcase who loves ranting about his evil plans While justified in that it's a computer version of him made after going off the deep end at the end of the original game, one wonders why Hojo was needed in the game at all if he wasn't going to be as considerable a threat]].

* HateDumb: One of the most ''massive'' HateDumb examples out there; perhaps a candidate for TropeNamer with how ''ridiculous'' the Hatedom has gotten over the years - you'll notice that if a HateDom arises for another popular game, it's often pushed to the side. FinalFantasyVII's HateDumb is practically ''encouraged''.

* VillainDecay: Sephiroth, along with some MotiveDecay in most subsequent appearances, though he never [[BadAssDecay stops being]] BadAss.

* PortingDisaster - not as bad as some games, but the PC version has a true MissingMomentOfAwesome because it made the jump to a 100%-{{MIDI}} soundtrack. The single non-MIDI that had to be left behind? ''The OminousLatinChanting on [[CrowningMusicOfAwesome One Winged Angel]].'' [[hottip:Okay, that's not entirely true...:As the "Ominous Latin Chanting" page mentions, it ''did'' include the choral track, but in a format that not every sound card could play.]]

** Yuffie was originally a hated character by some in the original game due to being the WutaiTheft TropeNamer. Characterization in ''KingdomHearts'', ''AdventChildren'' and ''{{Dirge of Cerberus}}'' helped to appease fans.

** For Shinra, it's destroying all of Sector 7 just to wipe out AVALANCHE, which has a grand total of ''six members''.

** The Turks, but primarily Reno. Interestingly enough, ''all'' spin-off games revolve around these Ensemble Darkhorse characters: ''Before Crisis'' for the Turks, ''Crisis Core'' for Zack'', and ''Dirge of Cerberus'' for Vincent.

* DracoInLeatherPants - Sephiroth appears to have surpassed many of the other characters in popularity across the Final Fantasy fandom because he's so damn [[WhiteHairedPrettyBoy "bish".]] Never mind that he, you know, ''almost [[EarthShatteringKaboom destroyed an entire planet]]'' and has numerous innocent deaths and pointless bloody rampages in his past.\\

In ''CrisisCore'', he is presented as [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feQQ_OUqbXE far more likable]] and understandable, though that was a prequel set ''before'' Sephiroth snapped in Nibelheim and became a homicidal maniac. This makes sense, as there had to be ''some'' reason that Cloud and Zack idolized Sephiroth before he went psycho. ''AdventChildren'', made by the same creative staff as ''Crisis Core'', still portrayed him as an unrepentant psychopath manipulating clones and spreading terminal disease from beyond the grave.\\

A lot of his fangirls actually see him in more of a [[WoobieDestroyerofWorlds Woobie Destroyer of Worlds]] way due to his [[FreudianExcuse Freudian Excuse]] and obvious mental illness. This doesn't stop him from being [[DracoInLeatherPants a Draco]], though.
** Rufus Shinra; [[spoiler:pre-''AdventChildren'' at least.]]
** Reno. Okay, admittedly the flattening an entire city district (with the people inside, no less) and pinning it on AVALANCHE wasn't his idea but that doesn't change the fact that he's the one who physically did the deed. A lot of people, however, ignore this and act as if he's a perfectly good guy. Tseng also gets some of this despite his introduction consisting of him [[KickTheDog slapping the captive Aerith]] and laughing at the party's hopelessness before the Sector 7 pillar collapses.

** A lot of fans are pretty irritated that Vincent was an optional character and therefore not important to the storyline, this has been somewhat rectified in the spin-offs.
** Zack.
** The Turks, but primarily Reno.

** President Shinra runs a MegaCorp that makes it profits off energy that is actually the life energy of the planet, as well as all beings on said planet living or dead- thats right; his company is actually built on selling ''souls''. His MoralEventHorizon is destroying Sector 7- an entire town- to wipe the rebel/ terrorist group based there, and then blaming it on said group. While listening to [[WickedCultured classical music]].

* MostWonderfulSound - Ultima spell. The LimitBreak sound

** Sephiroth is the BigBad of the game, so it's fitting that he gets his slice of this. This pleasant fellow went AxCrazy when he found out he was the product of genetic experiments and thought he was actually the artificialy created last member of the Cetra, an ancient people, and proceeded to burn down Cloud's home town because he just happened to be there when he found that out, killing many people including your Tifa's father (and presumably Cloud's mother, though Cloud never brings that up). He later finds out he's actually the artificially created son of the CosmicHorror alien monster that nearly wiped the Cetra, and the planet, out, and so decideds to [[OmnicidalManiac destroy the world]] and steal it's life force to become a [[AGodAmI god]]. He also messes with Cloud's memories and uses him to set his apoocalyptic plan in motion as revenge for Cloud nearly killing him for the aforementioned town burning thing. Along the way he finds time to psychically possess his abomination mother and use her/it to perform a massacre or two disguised as him, which also means he turned his own mother into his slave. Oh, and he [[InnocentFlowerGirl kills Aerith]]. Permanently. Sorry for [[ItWasHisSled the spoiler]].

* LoveItOrHateIt - Many Final Fantasy fans love it for it being their "first RPG", bringing the RPG genre into the mainstream, or for other reasons. Other Final Fantasy fans hate it for [[RuinedFOREVER ruining the franchise]] [[ItsPopularNowItSucks by making it popular]], or drastically changing some of the traditions the Final Fantasy series kept.

* BaseBreaker: The middle ground is slowly but surely being won back now that most of [[FanDom the]] [[HateDom 'Doms]] have grown up, but there are still a ''lot'' of people who fanatically praise him for being the best villain of all time and just as many who think he's unoriginal, overrated, and hate the fact that the former group refuses to shut up about him.
