* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Is March a man trying to find justice, or is he a man with a [[DeathSeeker death wish]] who ''wants'' the state to kill him? His life at the start of the story is, to put it mildly, bleak: his family hates him, he has horrible shellshock from his days in the war, his close associates are all Nazi stooges [[spoiler: who eventually turn on him]], he drinks on the job, he is probably aware of the genocide against the Jews and only wasn't aware of the grisly details, he hates the Third Reich and has too much dignity to become a stooge, and he can't exactly find asylum is another country. March behaves the way he does because he has nothing to live for.

to:

* HomeGrownHero: Charlie's presence plays this straight.straight; she is an American journalist who has been invited over to Germania (in the movie) or the Greater German Reich (in the book) to cover the impending summit between Hitler and Kennedy, as well as Hitler's birthday.

this doens't seme to be a trope or a YMMV entry
