Example is not actually an example, and is purely speculative on if audiences would be more willing to sympathize with Alex or not (considering what she did by the end, that isn't a cut and dry case.)


** Back then was a high point for audience entertainment with things like exciting showdowns, explosions, and wanting the hero to prevail and villain to finally be stopped, amongst other things. And there's the fact that mental health (particularly BPD) wasn't explored that well, while cheating and unempathetic behavior in relationships wasn't as well scrutinized and looked down as today. In more modern times, the original ending where Alex commits suicide and frames Dan would almost certainly be accepted, and she would be seen in a more sympathetic light, while Dan would be seen as an unsympathetic jerk.
