** Shortly before the game's release, Polygon uploaded a video of one of their reviewers playing the first 30 minutes of ''Doom''. The reviewer playing the game showed such an embarrassing lack of skill that Polygon ended up disabling ratings and comments for the video because of the sheer amount of vitriol it received. Many people wondered how a person who gets paid to play video games could suck so bad at it. A lot of the people criticizing the reviewer's ability also brought up that in the past, Polygon has penalized games for being too difficult (like ''Star Fox Zero'' and ''The Last of Us'').

* BrokenBase: The Alpha and Beta of the multiplayer opened up a can of worms, with players complaining about the multiplayer feeling like ''Franchise/{{Halo}}'' or ''VideoGame/CallOfDuty'' as it uses a loadout system and two-weapon limit similar to both. Some players have pointed out that the multiplayer is just enjoyable, maybe underwhelming. Even after the game's release, multiplayer has been the source of much bickering among the fanbase and is generally cited as the weakest part of the game.

** [=SnapMap=] has also been the cause of division among the fans. While it has powerful and fairly easy to use scripting, some have found it a poor replacement for actual mapping or modding tools as it suffers from strict memory and object limits and a poor variety of modules to use, with no ability to use a different tileset. It also inherits the maligned two-weapon limit and loadout system from multiplayer and only allows a maximum of 4 players to play on a map.

Not only can it easily shred your health due to being the only hitscan enemy in the game, but it also puts up a ''shield'' to protect it from the front, forcing you to run behind it and shoot its vulnerable backside (or you can just break the shield by shooting it, but it can take a ''lot'' of punishment and regenerates seconds after it's broken).

** Pinkies and Spectres. This game's take on them gives them chitinous armor that protects them from frontal attacks, and they now will charge at the player, doing a ''massive'' amount of damage if they connect. The charge attack can be hard to evade and the game's tendency to mix multiple pinkies into large fights makes it easy to lose track of them. The only reliable way of hurting them is to dodge a charge and shoot their exposed backside.

** The final game's multiplayer now gives us the Chaingun. An automatic weapon with a good rate of fire and decent accuracy that outmatches every other automatic weapon in damage per second. Its only real weakness is its spin-up time...which is ''completely negated'' by its secondary fire to spin the barrel up at a minimal movement penalty. Its not uncommon to see half the players in any given match only using chainguns.
