* BaseBreakingCharacter: Jared Stevens is either one of the best holders of the mantle, or one of its biggest embarrassments. This mostly owes to the fact that he comes off as a comically over-the-top NinetiesAntiHero at first glance, in concept, and in all promotional material, which is a hundred miles from what most fans of Dr. Fate want him to be. However, fans who fought through that initial awful impression tend to be rather fond of him, claiming that he was actually pretty likeable and interesting and didn't deserve the venom he got or his rather ignominious death.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** Linda Strauss: Due to UnfortunateImplications regarding her attraction to Eric, she comes off as a pedophile harboring feelings for a child, even if later on said child becomes older through the magic. This becomes arugably worse when Eric's older form is considered to be attractive to Linda, said feelings are returned by Eric, and the two are married in a reincarnated life with their memories intact.

* DorkAge: Both the versions introduced in the late 80s and 90s, involving the Erc/Linda Strauss and Jared Stevens versions are considered this for different reasons. Eric and Lnida's version of Doctor Fate would be summed up, as they did so in later appearances, as "footnotes" to the Doctor Fate legacies.

* AudienceAlienatingEra: While not lacking defenders and fans, the ''Fate'' and the ''Book of Fate'' series starring the Jared Stevens versions of the character is considered to be inferior to the original version of the character.

* MorePopularReplacement: Khalid Nassour to Kent V. Nelson and likely the other Doctor Fates; Both Khalid and Kent V. are great-nephew to Kent Nelson and bearers of the Doctor Fate legacies and share a interest in some kind of medical field. However, Khalid is the only comic-related character Doctor Fate to have been adapted into any form of media thus far.

* ReplacementScrappy: Jared Stevens. Both in-universe and out-of-universe.

* DorkAge: The horror that was ''Fate''. Eventually James Robinson and David Goyer [[CharacterRerailment brought back the real deal]], though not before ''killing off'' the other character. In front of the JSA. At a funeral service.
** Many people liked "Fate" (but NOT "Book of Fate"), and some even preferred that series to the original one. It was undeniably DarkerAndEdgier, though.
