** The climax of ''Fiends on the Other Side'' has Jamal's brother in danger of fading from existence as a shadow and already gone from almost everyone's memory, with only Jamal and Riley knowing who he is; even his parents don't remember he exists. [[spoiler:The epilogue has this happen to both brothers, screaming at their parents to remember them while they cheerfully watch TV and are happy they never had kids]].
** The ending of ''Liar, Liar, Head on Fire'' has [[spoiler:Hades rapidly aging Hector and then having the Fates kill him by cutting his thread of life, leaving his soul trapped in the River Styx for eternity]]. The matter-of-fact way it's described makes it worse.
** The end of ''Once Upon A Scream'' owes something to ''Literature/TheCaskOfAmontillado'', as [[spoiler:Dawn is chained up in a cellar where no one will ever find her and placed under an eternal sleeping curse]].
** One of the most horrific scenes in the series happens in ''The Circle of Ter-ROAR'' when Silas's Aunt Scarlett comes out of a photograph as a ghost when the photo ages and rots before his eyes, then pieces of her face are torn off like from an animal attack. After that she ages further into a skeleton and begs Silas to find out who killed her. Then there's the ending, where [[spoiler:the hyenas are ready to eat Silas alive]].
** The book covers themselves are unsettling. Darkness surrounds the villains and they're given extra features, such as pale skin and glowing eyes. All of them are [[WouldHurtAChild looking down at the children]], their varying terrified expressions not making things better... Some of the children [[{{Foreshadowing}} are even experiencing the fates they will suffer]] in the books.

* RewatchBonus: The second half of ''Liar, Liar, Head on Fire'' takes on new meaning after the ending reveals [[spoiler:Mae was using Hector]], particularly how no one except Hector and Mae can sense Hades' presence.

** ''[[WesternAnimation/ThePrincessAndTheFrog Fiends on the Other Side]]'': [[spoiler:[[LegacyCharacter Dr. Facilier]] was once a benevolent man who used his powers for good until [[AmbitionIsEvil he craved more power]]. After betraying his order and disfiguring Deseroux's face with dark magic, Facilier tries to manipulate her grandson Jamal into giving him her necklace, later sending shadow monsters and enchanted alligators to tear him apart when he refused. Cursing Jamal's twin brother Malik into the shadows, Facilier causes more damage to befall New Orleans by amplifying the hurricane, all to force Jamal to relent. [[ILied Despite Jamal giving him the necklace]], Facilier transforms him into a shadow and gleefully condemns them to painfully fade from existence while [[TheBadGuyWins he took over]].]]

Flame bait

* IdiotPlot: ''Second Star To The Fright'' more so than the others goes with the TropesAreTools route for this. It's lampshaded more than once that taking a hook from a haunted ship tourist attraction, from a vengeful ghost pirate, is a bad idea. Barrie even notes that he ought to give it to the marina managers, if for no other reason than to have the glory of finding a long-lost relic. He can't resist the idea of staying young forever and never growing up, however, and succumbs to temptation. John and Michael ask WhatWereYouThinking when he confesses to them, saying that if they were friends, they read all the stories where an action like that would go horribly wrong. They admit that the only option may be for Barrie to return the hook and apologize, but that it may also get Barrie killed.

toning down bashing, and given it's a Villain Based Franchise, the appeal seems to be for people who want the villains to win or otherwise enjoy the Disney Villains.

* TooBleakStoppedCaring: The series is infamous for being soul-crushingly bleak and horrific, with every single book in the series having some kind of CruelTwistEnding or DownerEnding happening to innocent and misguided victims who don't deserve it, and with only one of which doesn't have [[TheBadGuyWins the bad guy winning]] to add insult to injury. You really have to wonder what Disney and Vera Strange were thinking when they thought it was a good idea to make a book series that is nothing but a slap in the face to what the Disney Animated Canon stood for!
