* UncertainAudience: Part of its mixed reception is caused by the show's uncertainty between the MonsterOfTheWeek format and a more serialized storytelling (as made notable on TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot above). It does not help that WordOfGod revealed that the show was made to appeal to "[=iPad=] kids," as in very young audience raised on quick self-gratification like Instagram and [=TikTok=], and thus would get bored of long stories. See also WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids down this page for the additional confusion.

Conqueror, not Champion.

** portrayal as a [[spoiler:Sukuna-esque EvilOverlord who used to have no redeeming traits and only barely mellowed out by (passively) spending time with Hiro and his Gammamon]]. Some people think that it's an interesting and creative twist to the [[spoiler:series' apocalyptic abomination archetype mostly consisting of outright Eldritch Abominations -- in contrast, the Jet-Black Champion's various forms merely resemble dark versions of Gammamon's evolutions and walks amongst the protagonists inside a cute and friendly Digimon, emphasizing the ParanoiaFuel that any sufficiently powerful Digimon can be a force of destruction without looking too monstrous and they can be near you at any moment.]] Others believe it's a cheap cop-out that [[spoiler:could had been done much better if not for the limited number of serial episodes near the end, believing that he would be a better ClimaxBoss and something else, such as the mysterious Digimon who debuted in the same episode as Regulusmon or Lucemon, could take the BigBad or even the FinalBoss role instead, and his characterization can be done better than being an unhinged monster who's just put on a tight leash.]]

The Scrappy requires the character be nigh-unanimously hated, but Espimon does have fans and people who find him funny outside of the Running Gag, like Jellymon using him as a taser and his screaming "I hate my life!"

* TheScrappy: Espimon quickly became the most hated character in the show. The biggest reason is his unfunny running gag where he thought that Hiro was a "fake" due to not looking exactly like Hokuto, even after Hiro explains to Espimon that he's the "real" Hiro despite not being Hokuto's "spitting image." Additionally, said running gag was not only unfunny, but it also rapidly got on fans' nerves because it went on for 20+ episodes. Along with Espimon's one-note characterization of being an unfunny comic relief character, his subplot is overall useless to the show. His subplot of is resolved rather hurriedly and without much build-up, with said being the reason he abruptly accepts Hiro as "real" . Espimon's subplot being suddenly resolved brought much relief to fans because it meant the end of the despised "fake Hiro" running gag, but it was too little, too late because of the overall irrelevance of the character.
