In hindsight I think Cross is way too important of a character to be an Ensemble Darkhorse.

** Three words: [[FourStarBadass General Cross Marian]]. Despite his relatively small participation in the series, he has always managed to rank high in the popularity polls, being almost always in the top 10 (in the 3rd one he ranked the 12th, still close). Reasons for his great acceptance within the fandom include his badassery (during his first fight in the series, he defeated the previously thought invincible Noah Tyki with ease, he later destroyed a bunch of Level 3 Akumas like nothing and was the one who ultimately killed the [[EliteMook Level 4]] in the next arc, has two Innocences, one a gun that never runs out of ammo and that always follows his target, and another in the form of the corpse of a beautiful woman that he controls with magic and that can use her voice to create ilusions and control the enemy, can use magic, has a cool EyepatchOfPower that apparently allows him to disguise as other people and features both a beard and an imposing deep voice), the mystery surrounding his figure, his good looks and that, despite his rocky relationship with Allen, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold he actually cares about him.]]

** The Earl [[spoiler:has horns]]. Doubly so for those who read ''Zone'', the oneshot that provided the inspiration for the entire series. Also that he [[spoiler:is not his true form.]]

** On a meta example, there were fans that guessed that ''Hallow'' would be part of Creator/Funimation's summer simulcast season, despite not releasing the second half of the 2006 series on home video for five years until the legal issues between Funimation and Dentsu were sorted out. Turns out they were right. There were also people thinking that licensing ''Hallow'' for simulcast would lead to Funimation licensing the second half of the 2006 series. On June 30, 2016, the company announced just that; the second half of the 2006 series would eventually be released to home video starting October 10, 2017.

** Tyki Mikk. The author admitted that Tyki exists because [[AuthorAppeal she wanted to draw a handsome guy]]. One of the CreepyTwins, Devit, is also really popular among female fans (and perhaps even Jasdero). And new character [[WhiteHairBlackHeart Wisely]] appears to have been a big hit despite only appearing in the few latest chapters.
** Road has been known to invoke this as well, even with non-{{Lolicon|AndShotacon}} fans. And don't forget Lulu Bell!
** [[spoiler:Eliade]] fits this trope to a T, [[FemmeFatale using her good looks to her advantage]].
** The Earl's human form, [[spoiler: Mana]], as a handsome, fit and dapper man in his early fifties.

** BrokenBase: The changes to the anime adaptation. Allen's TrainingFromHell is almost a black comedy that makes Cross Marian downright unlikable. unlikable, and it alters the order of some of the arcs during the first 25 episodes. On the plus sides, side, Kanda comes across as more sympathetic when it comes to his allies during the Noah's Ark.Ark arc, and the anime develops a few characters who in the manga barely received characterization before dying (most significantly Suman Dark), as well as make the transition between some arcs less sudden.
** [[GenreShift The change of the manga from a traditional battle shonen series to a more mystery driven, drama-centered one]] has caused quite a few divisions between fans. Defenders claim it makes a more interesting and less cliched plot and it makes Allen’s struggle more personal and tragic, while detractors argue that the manga became way too convoluted and confusing at one point to the point of being almost unreadable, while neglecting popular characters (among them two of the main characters) in favor of more controversial ones (such as Johnny). The slow publication rate of the manga doesn’t helps either.

* ParanoiaFuel: Akuma run on this. As they hide in the human society wearing the skin of the person who summoned them, they can remain undetected as long as they desire and can commit their murders with no one suspecting them. And while Level 1 Akuma tend to be single-minded and robotic, Level 2s and above are shown to be way more cunning and devious in their methods, which makes them even more dangerous. So far the only way to detect an Akuma before they reveal their status as one is with Allen’s cursed eye, who can see their souls after he was cursed by Mana when he was a child. Normal Exorcists have no way of finding out who is and isn’t an Akuma, however, [[ProperlyParanoid which makes them more nervous and distrustful against common people]]. In fact, the story has Allen go through an episode where his eye is unable to work due to the injuries he received in the Rewinding Town arc, which makes him understand the fear and paranoia all of his comrades normally feel when they’re on the job.

* MemeticLoser: Lavi has become the object of mockery and memes among fans for his lack of screentime after the Noah's Ark arc and being DemotedToExtra despite being one of the main characters, with even Hoshino poking fun at that in one of the omakes from the manga. This reached a new whole scale when Lavi was captured (off-screen no less) by the Noah at the end of the Artificial Exorcists arc and held as a hostage to make Bookman reveal the truth of the 14th Noah, with his last scene onscreen being Sheryl furiously slamming him against a wall to threaten Bookman. Following that, he hasn’t appeared at all in the manga except for flashbacks and imaginary spots, with fans wondering if he will even reappear at some point. It’s noteworthy to say he has been absent for '''an entire decade'''.

Allen the dog was killed more to hurt Red than to hurt Mana, and was what ended up prompting Mana to look after Allen. He never lost his mind before meeting Red, so he only got Mind Wiped once, after taking the blow from Red during his rampage

** MANA. Full stop. In his 50 years of life the man has witnessed the death of his family at the hand of his twin, been tricked into thinking he murdered his own mother, been forced to murder his LivingEmotionalCrutch, been possessed by the in-universe version of Satan (and forced on the run from him), been mind wiped and mind raped at least twice, wound up so traumatized he forgot previous points, had his dog murdered by a business rival, and then finally gaslit into an IdentityBreakdown so severe he thinks the Noah (who secretly despise him) are his family and won't recognize Allen as his own son.

Not what happened. Can't find any indication Red was sexually abused, Mana genuinely cared for Red after Allen the dogs death even if not outright adopting him, and once Red went berserk due to Apocryphos' machinations, Mana took the blow and lost his "soul", turning him into the perfect host for the Millenium Earl suit.

** Then we have the backstory chapters revealing that [[spoiler: Allen grew up physically, mentally and sexually abused at a circus, his father '''did''' in fact genuinely love him and had no clue about his connections to the 14th, and finally '''Allen''' was the one responsible for breaking his mind; though controlled by Apocryphos. He teamed up with Mana afterwards and '''convinced''' the amnesiac to adopt him out of guilt and a fear of his safety.]]

* DramaticIrony: [[spoiler: The last Earl died and was reborn as twins after experiencing love for the first time in 7000 years, the new emotion coming in conflict with his up-until-that-point unwavering hatred of mankind. His newfound love of the world was embodied in the twin named Mana and his hatred of mankind in the twin named Nea. Despite this, it was the FriendOfAllLivingThings Mana that became Adam's new host; whereas MisanthropeSupreme Nea, who would have likely embraced the position of Earl with flying colors, was deemed an outsider and a traitor. This resulted in Adam winding up with a host that actively rejects him and stands for all that he abhors, while he stubbornly avoids the person who is actually willing to take on the mantle of "The Earl of Millenium" out of fear of rousing said host. As a result the new Millennium Earl suffers severe identity issues and conflicting loyalties that drive him batshit insane on the best of days and makes him unfit to lead the current generation of Noah; who in return lack the ambition towards world domination their predecessors held and often act out of line.]]
