** [[AntagonistTitle Colonel Sun Liang-tan himself]] is the most sadistic foe James Bond has ever come across. The most refined TortureTechnician the [[UsefulNotes/ChineseWithChopperSupport People's Liberation Army]] has ever produced, Colonel Sun sees James Bond as his opportunity for a masterpiece of human suffering. In league with Nazi war criminal Von Richter, Colonel Sun plans to bomb a conference being held in the Soviet Union--which itself will lead to a "considerable" loss of life--and plans to frame Great Britain for the deed with Bond's corpse and thus trigger WorldWarIII. In preparation, Sun plans to torture Bond to death. An avid follower of the Creator/MarquisDeSade, Sun plans to torture Bond to death over the course of days, hoping to achieve "superhuman awareness" through the intimacy of the atrocity. During the most sadistic torture sequence in the history of the franchise, Sun forces his own allies to watch and even makes one of his captive girls, Luisa, strip and sexually humiliate herself in front of Bond to taunt him with the female form he will never know again.
** [[ThoseWackyNazis Von Richter]] is the right hand of Colonel Sun. A renegade Nazi war criminal, Von Richter was responsible for numerous atrocities during [[UsefulNotes/WorldWarII the second World War]]. Invading villages, Von Richter would gather civilians in buildings and set them on fire, with machine gunners ready to kill any who tried to escape. As Sun's associate, Von Richter is in charge of the mortar attack on a Soviet conference, which he gloats will be a "considerable" massacre.

* HilariousInHindsight: Colonel Sun talks at great length about how the West and Soviet Union's relationship will continue to thaw while the Red Chinese will only grow as a threat. As anyone with a knowledge of modern history will know, the United States allied with China economically and continued to work against the Soviet Union until it's fall in 1992.

As anyone with a knowledge of modern history will know, the opposite happened - the United States allied with China economically and continued to work against the Soviet Union until it's its fall in 1992.

YMMV cannot be played with.

* BrokenBase: Averted surprisingly. Kingsley Amis is one of the few authors to be considered equal to Fleming in the ''Bond'' novels. Generally, ''Colonel Sun'' is considered the only pastiche "worthy" of being among the canon. This notably wasn't the case when the book was first released with Kingsley Amis' communist politics being a good deal more controversial in 1968, even though Amis had renounced communism a full 12 years earlier in 1956.

* NightmareFuel: The infamous torture scene, which is described in far more graphic detail than Bond's previous outings. It was so dark that ''{{Film/Spectre}}'' adapted much of it, including the creepy monologue preceding it.
