** There is a similarly intense scene later in the book when Bernie, after crashing his car while chasing a perp, is left dangling over a massive cliff, holding onto a small branch. Chet has to pull him up to safety. Chet holds onto the branch as long as he can, but there is a brief moment where Chet is the only thing supporting his weight. Thankfully Chet manages to save Bernie, but if things had gone worse, Bernie could have accidentally pulled Chet over the edge with him...

** Bernie is a total badass, yet you've still got to feel bad for him. He's perpetually dealing with money problems, a run-down car, an ex-wife who's honestly kind of a stone-cold jerk, and more, yet he still tries to take it in stride, and manages to be a very caring and generous person as well.
** Chet is also quite capable of handling himself. But although he doesn't have to deal with Bernie's human struggles, you can't help but feel bad for him too when he's injured or abused by the various criminals throughout the series. BadPeopleAbuseAnimals for sure.
* NightmareFuel:
** There is a sequence in the middle of the first book where Chet gets separated from Bernie, and it is ''intense''. Things just keep getting worse and worse for the poor dog:
*** It starts when Chet, wandering the neighborhood after chasing a squirrel, sees two of the criminals Bernie is trying to find. Chet impulsively attacks them, but the criminals overpower Chet, shove him in the trunk of their car, and take him to their hideout far out in one of Nevada's deserts. Having been trapped in the trunk for the whole ride, Chet obviously has no way of knowing which direction they've gone.
*** When they get to the hideout, their leader, Gulagov, locks Chet up, planning to retrain him and sell him to a dogfighting ring in Mexico. Gulagov's attempts to train Chet are futile, as Chet refuses to obey him. Chet eventually escapes and makes a run for it, and Gulagov and his men start shooting at him.
*** While wandering through the desert, Chet is suddenly pounced on by a cougar. He just barely manages to get away.
*** Chet is then found by some bikers, who take him to an animal shelter with a three-day grace period before putting animals down. Three days come and go, and Chet is actually ''on the table, about to be injected'', when Suzie, who knows Chet and Bernie, visits the shelter by sheer coincidence and saves him, finally putting an end to this sequence.
