* NintendoHard: To put it in perspective: The 20th Anniversary version has an achievement for dying 100 times. Even on the easiest difficulty level, most players can expect to see it ''long'' before beating the game. However, these versions have checkpoints show up much more commonly, plus (like the original) you have unlimited lives. You die a ''lot'', but rarely lose much progress when you do. If you ''do'' get to a point of no return (which is rare), the game will make sure that you ''won't'' get a checkpoint then.

** Comparing the UsefulNotes/SegaGenesis and UsefulNotes/SuperNintendo versions of the games, both feature a new soundtrack and are harder than the ports before it. While the SNES version has better audio quality, it lacks in performance (the game will slow down a lot of times), and [[LoadsAndLoadsOfLoading load times]], despite being a cartridge-based system! The Sega CD version does rectify all the problems from both (even the load times, despite being on a system notorious for these).
** Some may consider the UsefulNotes/ThreeDOInteractiveMultiplayer version to be this. Despite some nice visuals and a good soundtrack, and teasing the fans with a sequel, the common complaints included the updated backgrounds and soundtrack not fitting with the atmosphere and what is going on in the game. Also, the sequel was never even released on the 3DO.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: The games unique atmosphere and minimalistic graphics have aged beautifully but, like fellow early cinematic game VideoGame/DragonsLair, the gameplay itself has not been so lucky. Lester's controls are widely seen as horribly clunky, with his sluggish and precise movement taking a lot of getting used to and not meshing well with game's emphasis on TrialAndErrorGameplay. The infinite lives and continues help with this, but the game's love of instant death traps can make it seem like infinite tries was an excuse to make the game as unforgiving as possible. The infuriating design of the gameplay can really make it hard to appreciate just how incredibly innovative the game was at the time.

* FanonDiscontinuity: The sequel, where the first game's director wasn't present. According to WordOfGod, the publisher (Interplay) got an opportunity they had pestered him about to make a game ''they'' wanted, and the result was a buggy, tonally-inconsistent and generally almost unplayable mess of a game that no one even gives an inch of positive opinion. [[spoiler: And it crossed the line by [[MoodWhiplash abruptly]] killing off Lester.]]

* ParanoiaFuel: The game loves to have enemies stalking you and appearing suddenly to try and ambush you. The king of these sneaky monsters is definitely the Beast, a relentless predator who manages to be more efficiently and terrifying than armed soldiers as it pursues Lester.

* {{Sequelitis}}: The first game was great, but hard and yet forgivable. ''Heart of the Alien'' is a lot harder for the wrong reasons, and looks comparatively worse than the first game. Having stiffer controls, and challenges based around these controls, really didn't help this game. The big thing that saves it is its inclusion of the best console version of Another World at the time, complete with the best soundtrack for it.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Some people complain that by making the background more detailed in Anniversary Collector's edition it ruins the minimalistic art style that makes the game so atmospheric. But that is nothing compared to the 3DO version which has a very generic sci-fi feel to it. Though the 20th anniversary edition averts this by providing the option to play the game in the original graphic settings.

There are some similarities between this game and Half-Life.

Added DiffLines:

* HilariousInHindsight: The game’s protagonist is a [[HeroicMime silent]] [[ActionSurvivor physicist]] who causes an [[GoneHorriblyWrong experiment that goes horribly wrong]] and gets teleported to an alien world. In his [[EverythingTryingToKillYou struggle to survive,]] he deals with killer tentacles, witnesses alien slavery, and faces off [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking leeches.]] Now why does that sound [[VideoGame/HalfLife familiar?]] Becomes more amusing as both games were considered groundbreaking for their time.
