* CrazyAwesome: So many characters. Robber is flag bearer for this trope in the Fifteenth, leading the way with chants of "Kill them, take their stuff!" and "Stab the kidney, loot the corpse!". It seems to run in the sappers, who willingly work with the very dangerous goblin munitions because they like seeing things explode. Catherine has dabbled in it herself, punching out giant devil snakes after climbing up their backs and coming up with the idea of undead suicide goats in the first place.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Both sides of the fight between "Good" and Evil are made up of jerks and Catherine clearly keeps getting worse as the story goes on to the point that [[spoiler: She would rather fully embrace being Evil rather gleefully and not regret a single one of her actions then admit the Angels possibly getting a win over her.]]

*** Yet what she is becoming is not so much better, claiming she no longer cares about justifications, and just wants to seize power to get Callow beaten into a shape that can function. Ultimately making her sound somewhat akin to the Heiress. Well, on a good day when Heiress realises ruling a place means running it and not feeding it to demons as a gambit, at least.
* MagnificentBastard: The Black Knight is the reigning king of this in the series,[[spoiler: having spent the last forty years setting up the board so he can beat Fate itself.]] Dread Empress Malicia seems to scare the Praesi nobles even more, and considering they're a Deadly Decadent Court it would take a lot to frighten them.

* RecycledPremise: The story is similar in concept to ''Literature/{{Worm}}'', with a teenaged girl protagonist and an artificial BlackAndWhiteMorality imposed on a far more complex reality, but set in a Medieval-Fantasy setting instead of a Superhero setting.
* ShoutOut: There are a number of references to the EvilOverlordList. The minor character, the Bumbling Conjurer, is only the most obvious. Black basically has a copy of it tucked away somewhere he refers to. Almost literally: he keeps tabs on typical Villain tropes found in the local stories of any place he gets interested in as a general guide as to what not to do -- and keeps notes.

** Some of the Dread Emperors in the background seem to have been that way as well. Dread Emperor Traitorous stands out the most, having betrayed a Named called The Betrayer and frequently starting secret cabals with the aim of overthrowing himself. He even passed as his own Chancellor with a paper-thin disguise, and died by committing suicide and pinning the blame for his death on 100 different people.

* UnfortunateImplications: The "good" Callowans are pale skinned with English names. The two main human ethnic groups in the "evil" Empire of Praes are pseudo-African and pseudo-Arabic. Unlike most examples of this, it appears to be entirely deliberate, to illustrate the implications of the "BlackAndWhiteMorality".

Again, it's akin to Worm more so because of the specifcally named "Heroes" and "Villains" teams and Catherine using and embracing the Villain side to do what she thinks is good. This makes it more so like Worm then any other YA novel.

* RecycledPremise: The story is basically ''Literature/{{Worm}}'', but set in a Medieval-Fantasy setting instead of a Superhero setting. Except no more so than any other novel with a young female protagonist making hard choices.

A world filled with people who get great powers? People who are supposed to be good guys are actuall self-righteous idiots/ The supposed bad guysare actually aren't all that bad/ The main character is a young teenaged girl who joins the supposed evil side and does much better then most and proudly is ok with being evil and doing evil things for a "greater good"? Am I talking about Worm or Practical Guide?

* RecycledPremise: The story is basically ''Literature/{{Worm}}'', but set in a Medieval-Fantasy setting instead of a Superhero setting. Well, kind of. If you squint a lot.
