** Shifting POVs and protagonists. Again, this only applied to A New Hope due to the readers' prior knowledge of the characters. But with the [=OCs=], it's hard to determine who exactly we're rooting for. This wasn't a nominal problem in Final Horizon due to establishing Hayate and Alice well during the story, but it's evident in Sea of Tranquility, especially with its rushed introductions.
** FlatCharacters. In a franchise with a wide range of three-dimensional characters each with its own stories, the characters in sequels sometimes feel hollow. Some of them have personalities that revolve around their talents, others are simply there with a certain character quirk placed on them. Not helping are the rushed introductions, all of which sputter out some lines and often feel as if they're scripted to introduce themselves. Overall, it hurts the immersion in the story and may leave fans out.

** A problem that's often overlooked is the pacing of the sequels, with Final Horizon and Sea of Tranquility being big offenders. Normally, the Killing Game goes for a balanced pace, allowing the audience to bond with the characters for a little while right before the first murder. With the faster pace, sometimes it's hard getting to know the characters. The murders happen a few chapters away from single scenes, and it is only then that most of their backstories are revealed. Turns out, they might have something compelling to tell, but couldn't due to the speed at which the audience learns. The end result? A ton of cases of WeHardlyKnewYe and TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter (see below), all of which hurt the experience. In A New Hope, this isn't that much of a problem since many of the characters are well-established in canon. But with [=OCs=], this becomes even more of an issue which leads to them sometimes falling flat. There is some mitigation in the sequels, though the problem still persisted very well.

*** You'd Expect: [[spoiler: Teruteru to knock Himiko unconscious to minimize bloodspill, and then throw her body and the staff into the piranha tank to dispose of her easily. Since there wouldn't be any evidence pointing to him, he could've just appeared at the scene and acted as if he was just as shocked at the rest of the students. It'd be just like the second murder of VisualNovel/DanganRonpaV3 but at least Teruteru never had any loose clothing that would be the only evidence present.]]

* CompleteMonster: Unsurprisingly, a number of antagonists end up in this category:
** Dr. Jibo Momota, The Ultimate Biologist. A SocialDarwinist who thinks only Ultimates deserve to live, he joined Ultimate Despair (not through being brainwashed) and ended up [[spoiler: experimenting on the members of Class 80-A, without remorse. His resume during that time includes cutting teenagers, forcing them to relive traumatic events, lecherously focusing on the girls (to the point of blatantly staring at Alice's body and implying a certain requirement for her to leave his care), and sending an adult Sadist to do who-knows-what to one teenager who HatesBeingTouched.]] All while espousing how morals hold people back and how he'd kill 99% of humanity for the 1% of Ultimates if he had to.
** Ringo Takagami. A hitman and genuine sociopath, he sees the Killing Game (and indeed, life in general) as just a way of testing/honing his abilities. Uncaring of his fellow classmates, even going so far as to threaten to kill someone immediately when the option to do so and leave is available (only not doing so because that would end the fun too early and, allegedly, only trying to do so to see if Monokuma would stop him), he makes it clear from the get go he fully intends to win the game on his own time and in his own way. He eventually follows through by rigging traps throughout the station, fully intending to kill everyone indirectly to leave as the SoleSurvivor. And no, he had no DarkAndTroubledPast to explain himself; he just liked using live people as his target practice.
** [[spoiler: Dylan Rufheiser, the Ultimate Psychopath, arguably manages to take Ringo's crown after he reveals his true colors beneath his MaskOfSanity. He is a StrawAtheist who doesn't care about what others believe and sees no value in the dead, and is also an AxCrazy killer who sees murder as orgasmic. He murdered Mallory in cold blood for his own amusement and was the one who murdered Miyaki in the first case while framing Rene in his place and causing his execution. Once he removes his facade of innocence, Dylan deliberately antagonized the others to make them hate him, causing them to want to kill him to end the madness. Before his eventual demise, he murdered most of the animals in the ranch and fed the remaining animals the corpses of the dead students which he descerated. If you thought the some of the other villainous students (Tsumugi, Korekiyo, Ringo and AGodAmI Jana) were bad, Sadist Dylan is undoubtedly worse than all of them combined.]]
** [[spoiler: And even more EvilerThanThou is Yukiko Fukunaga, the Ultimate Sociopath, is the one holding Dylan's leash, in a literal sense for her since she merely thinks of Dylan as a non-human RightHandAttackDog and nothing more. Acting for no reason other than to (as an ArtificialHuman with nothing from before the game) 'leave a legacy', she poisons Mikhail after directing Dylan to kill Miyaki, set Amare up to kill someone (knowing that Amare had been blackmailed like this before), directed Dylan to destroy the memorial to demoralize everyone (the murder was unintentional), and orchestrated the events of the fourth and fifth cases. She even used a trap to kill Dylan without his knowledge not because she thought he deserved it, but because she was tired of him and didn't want him to "ruin her fun". She later reveals that she's another of Jibo Momota's offspring and she's followed in his footsteps. Then, she activates a Despair Virus that would kick-start a second Tragedy and then ditches the others and leaves them to fight Despair by themselves.]]
** [[spoiler: Alexander Fotia, the Ultimate Sorcerer. While on the surface he's a charming and flirtatious man, underneath he is nothing more than a Serial Killer with an insane bloodlust. This is furthered with the reveal that he was working with Junko, purely because she was as crazy as he is.]]

** Rika Nyan Nyan A nickname for the Ultimate Neko, Riku Ito, that originated as a joke on the Discord, which then not only became canon, but recieved fanart of said character dressed in a pink outfit, which also became canon. The name has become synonymous with Riku's creator, BirblordAlmighty as well.

** The Ultimate ButtmonkeyOne of the writers and fans of the series, BirblordAlmighty, has become notable due to 3 of his 4 currently canon characters (Axel, Riku and Takeo) displaying Buttmonkey tendencies. It's become somewhat of a joke on the Discord that every character he makes will become a Buttmonkey. Has since died down with BirblordAlmighty, but has grown with user Trust Me, due to much mockery regarding the lewdness of his OCs.
