* When Michael Dorn read about Worf decapitating a Ferengi crime lord, he briefly suggested that it could be Quark, going so far as to contact Creator/ArminShimmerman to ask about the cameo, but the idea was ultimately rejected as it was felt that, even if Quark was never Worf's favourite person, it would be out of character for him to so coolly kill his old acquaintance like that.

* Robert Duncan [=McNeill=] was approached to reprise his role as ''Voyager's'' Tom Paris in season 1 but was unable to do so due to scheduling conflicts. [[WordOfSaintPaul As McNeill recalled]], it would have only been a couple of scenes but would have seen Paris interact with Picard, whether via a viewscreen or in his office. [=McNeill=] would make a voice appearance on ''WesternAnimation/StarTrekLowerDecks'' the following year.

* Leonard Nimoy ''almost'' didn't get to direct the film. Despite expressing interest in doing so, it was widely believed at Paramount (and to the public at large) that his last film appearance was meant to be a permeant bow-out for him and his character (which it was up until he came to regret that decision). He had to personally speak to Micheal Eisner directly in order to clear things up.

* The ''Enterprise''-E was originally planned to be another ''Galaxy''-class--they even repainted the four-foot model with the letters NCC-1701-E--but decided later to go with the more aggressive-looking ''Sovereign''-class.

* The ''Enterprise''-E was originally planned to be another ''Galaxy''-class--they even repainted the four-foot model with the letters NCC-1701-E--but decided later to go with the more aggressive-looking ''Sovereign''-class. Originally, this was done because the creators feared that Paramount wouldn't let them design a new ship for budgetary constraints (even though they already destroyed the ''D'' in the last film to do just that), and were surprised they got the go-ahead.

* Creator/MichelleYeoh initially made the proposal to do a spinoff series centered around her character, but it was later expanded to focus on Section 31.
* The film in itself was supposed to be a television series, but due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision to develop ''Strange New Worlds'', and Yeoh developing a very busy schedule, it was changed into a direct-to-streaming movie.
* Creator/JonathanFrakes had expressed a desire to direct the pilot episode (back when it was still being made into a tv show), but Olatunde Osunsanmi was given the chair.

* As well as the above cases, there's the long-running saga of proposals for a ''[[MilitaryAcademy Starfleet Academy]]'' teen drama series, something which began as early as the end of the original series and has repeatedly been brought up since. It's never materialised, largely because it seems to have always been something that network executives thought would be popular but which actual showrunners never had any interest in - the closest the franchise has gotten to getting this concept out there is the non canonical 1997 VideoGame ''VideoGame/StarTrekStarfleetAcademy''.

Eventually, a new ''Starfleet Academy'' series entered into active development during the ''Discovery'' era.
