Hasbro originally approached Sony to do the distributing for the film, but Sony wanted to do what they did with the 2011 Smurfs movie, mainly the tired old "cartoon characters come to the real world and interact with people" cliche. Hasbro, likely for the better, decided to go with Lionsgate instead.
