''Kung Fu Panda'' is a CG-animated comedy from Creator/DreamWorksAnimation, [[NeverTrustATrailer or so the trailers would have you believe]].

In actuality, it's about as [[{{Dramedy}} balanced between humor and epic martial arts action]] as an old-school Creator/JackieChan film (which makes sense, considering he's Monkey's VA), with '''much''' prettier art.

Set in an [[WorldOfFunnyAnimals anthropomorphic animal version]] of pre-modern China, the story follows Po, a kung-fu enthusiast, as he starts as the (apparently adopted) son of a noodle shop owner and becomes [[TheChosenOne the Dragon Warrior]], just by landing in the right place at the right time. His battle for acceptance by the people he's looked up to his whole life leads him on both comic and tragic turns, especially once he finds out what being TheChosenOne actually ''means'': fighting Tai Lung, the dangerous former disciple of Master Shifu who turned evil because he felt cheated out of becoming the Dragon Warrior, and has escaped from imprisonment to claim the title by force and get revenge on his master.

A {{sequel}}, ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda2'', was released on May 26, 2011 and ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda3'', produced with the new Oriental [=DreamWorks=] studio in China, was released on January 29, 2016.

It's also gotten a [[RecycledTheSeries TV series]] on Creator/{{Nickelodeon}} called ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPandaLegendsOfAwesomeness'' ([[TheOtherDarrin without most of the original]] [[ThePoorMansSubstitute voice actors]]), as well as the prime time ChristmasSpecial ''Kung Fu Panda Holiday''.

** The second day of Po's "training" starts off with Shifu and the Five thinking Po had quit when they discovered that his room was empty. When they get to the Training Hall, they're shocked to find that Po had actually woken up early to train (and gotten himself stuck in the device used to hone flexibility).

-->'''Mr. Ping''': Yes, they're leaving before breakfast.
-->'''Young Po''': No, Dad, if I hadn't poisoned Shifu with my food, then none of this would have ha... ppened.

* [[UnlikelyHero Unlikely Heroes]]: When Tigress picks up Po's scroll after mistaking it for Shifu's, it lists a cleaner, a comedian, a dancer, and a doctor, which was originally Po's list of possible careers. She finds Crane doing janitorial work at the Wang Fu village training hall, Monkey doing a comedy club routine to the audience's disappointment, Viper who can do a good ribbon dance, and Mantis, a would-be acupuncturist whose first patient is Shifu.

* BaitAndSwitch: Referenced in Po's quote at the top of this page: what looks to be a moment of awesomeness instead falls flat, literally... Only to be [[DoubleSubversion Doubly Subverted]] when, just as he's about to get up and go home, the firecrackers have a delayed ignition.

--> '''Shifu:''' Thank you, Po. Thank you... thank you...
--> '''Po:''' ...No! No, Master Shifu, don't die!
--> '''Shifu:''' ''(suddenly opens eyes)'' I'm not dying, you idiot!

* {{Badass}}: So very, ''very'' many, but Tai Lung takes the cake and then robs the whole damn bakery.

** Technically the rhino guardsmen are actually pretty good shots, as shown when a single rhino guard is able to accurately hit a stick of dynamite on the ceiling of the prison. The problem is that [[{{Badass}} Tai Lung is just that good]].

* YouCantFightFate: Played with. Both films contain some sort of prophecy that comes true, but it only comes true specifically because people go out of their way to stop it from doing so. Shifu [[spoiler: sends Zheng to deliver a message to Chorh-Gom Prison and which incidentally provided Tai Long a lockpick]]. Then Shen by [[spoiler:attempting to wipe out the pandas thereby causing Po's parents to send him off to Mr. Ping where he would eventually be trained by Shifu]]. Thus, destiny is implied to have come about specifically because people tried to defy it. This is noted by Oogway, who mutters "one often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it" when Shifu sends Zheng off.

-->'''Oogway''': No matter how much you try, you will never be Shifu. The question is: can ''you'' be Tigress?
* EarnYourHappyEnding: Tigress and the rest of the Five get a chance to confront Boar on the battlefield, and with some teamwork, they get a chance to demonstrate they have what it takes to become kung fu warriors, and win their first battle.
** After they return to the Jade Palace:
-->'''Shifu''': Sloppy, very sloppy. Your technique is unorthodox and undisciplined. Training begins right away.

* BritishAccents: Done as an awesome reveal. Tai Lung has been talked up as a [[MemeticBadass legendary]] [[OneManArmy One-Leopard Army]] throughout the movie with his very own TailorMadePrison, and the scene where he escapes from said prison is spectacularly violent and ingenious. Once outside, he grabs the goose messenger, smiles, opens his mouth to speak... and out comes the smooth, cultured rumble of Ian [=McShane=]. Compare this to some dubs, where he has a deep, almost Darth Vader like voice.
