* BeastMan: One of the first crystals the protagonists find is able to turn those it touches (or rather, anyone who drinks the liquid it was stored in), into [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent werewolf-like creatures]]. Muna later sockets the crystal in herself, naming it ''Fierce Forward'', but finding that its effects seem to have changed, with her showing more birdlike qualities like an affinity for heights and the ability to fly. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that the true power of the crystal is to cause those affected to "regress" into their native Beast form, with all the powers and flaws of that form, as well as the crystal's true name of ''Beast''.]]
** [[spoiler:It's also revealed that the Bygone Age was populated by tribes of Beasts, humanoid animal people with vastly superior strength and intellect compared to modern day humans, but each race of Beasts had a FatalFlaw that [[PlanetOfHats strongly influenced their actions to the point of defining them]], along with a general lack of empathy for others. The five tribes that we know of are the arrogantly intelligent Foxes, the ruthless Wolves, the impulsive Eagles, the vain Snakes and the Patient Turtles.]]

* TheChiefsDaughter: Muna had this as part of her backstory, referring to herself as a Princess a few times. [[spoiler:This changes when her father remarries, resulting in him stepping down from the position of chieftain due to the rules of their society. This comes as a shock to her (mainly because the original message informing her of this didn't reach her until she had ''already returned home'' due to terrible postal service), but she quickly gets over it, placing more value on her abilities as a leader than the actual title.]]

* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Due to the dangerous and [[RealityWarper reality warping]] nature of crystals when they're feral, particularly messy or weird deaths are officially considered a sign of the presence of feral crystals in the Syn manual.

* JustifiedTitle: The title of the comic, as well as the titles of the individual chapters each have "heart" in the title, and the theme of (crystal) hearts features majorly in the story. In the case of the chapters, the names are proverbs, such as "Heart of Stone" "Wild at Heart", or Heartless" - all refering to something that happens in the chapter, such as a crystal heart that can literally turn people to stone.

* InternalReformist: In the epilogue, [[spoiler:Muna has become this for the new Syn, taking charge after the previous leaders resigned their position for their actions, as she felt the organization is still needed and could do some legitimate good if some changes are made, including informing all the agents on what they know and getting all their opinions on matters instead of having a shadowy leadership deciding everything]].

* PersonalityPowers: A sort of Inverted example, where the personality is enforced by the power - the crystals granting the Syn agents their special abilites also have a Disposition, [[LiteralChangeOfHeart causing the agent to feel a certain emotion or display a specific habit]]. The specifics varies from crystal to crystal, usually matching the theme of the crystal in some way (e.g. ''Good Fellow'' grants empathic abilities but makes its user easily distracted, while Survivor grants some powerful defensive abilities but makes its user stubborn). These Dispositions can be resisted, but it's not always easy.

Added DiffLines:

* [[PlanetOfHats Species of Hats]]: [[spoiler:According to the Turtle statue, each of the various Beast tribes had a particular Hat (Foxes outsmart, Turtles preserve, etc.) that they seemingly ''couldn't'' change, even if it wasn't in their best interests. The Turtle statue also had a Hat for humans, which was that they ''fail''. While this seems like an insult at first, it's actually given a positive spin by the statue itself as humans may fail, but they can ''learn'' from those failures and try again, while the Beasts, despite all their power, were seemingly unable to change, which led most to their doom.]]

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Raffaela's backstory. She was part of a group of orphans turned pick-pockets. One day, they found a crystal... then, a Syn agent showed up and murdered another child to get the crystal. Raffaela joined Syn to get revenge.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Part of Lily's plan to screw over Raffaela's nemesis [[spoiler:"Cowboy-Hat," a.k.a. Arman]], another Syn agent, involves using the Requisitions rules to take said nemesis' crystal from them. This succeeds, with the help of [[RulesLawyer Guy]], however it doesn't occur to her until the crystal is in Raffaela's hands that the thought of socketing a crystal that was used to murder Raffaela's friends would ''disgust'' her. By that point it was too late to reasonably back out, but while the crystal (Dominion, which has the ability to command others to a certain extent) does prove useful at times, Raffaela still looks to replace it at the first opportunity.

* AbusivePrecursors: [[spoiler:The Foxes almost certainly count. * AfterTheEnd: The setting takes place around 800 years after an unknown catastrophe ended the previous, incredibly advanced civilization, with new cultures rising from the remains. Added Literal Change Of Heart and To Be Lawful or Good to the Trope list. Also edited Personality Powers.

* LiteralChangeOfHeart: This happens to Syn agents when they remove their original hearts and replace them with crystals, though the change is usually less drastic than normal for this trope, and can cross over with HeartTrauma. This can also happen with regular people who receive a heart transplant, due to the personality being determined by the [[GemHeart heart as much as the brain in this setting]]. [[spoiler: This happened to Macintosh's younger brother, who received a new heart from a recently deceased miner to save his life after his own heart developed cracks. Afterwards, he began to sympathize much more with the downtrodden workers, leaving his noble background behind to help lead the miners in a revolution]].

Added Blessed with Suck and Didn't Think This Through to the Trope list

Added DiffLines:

* BlessedWithSuck: Overlaps with CursedWithAwesome. Syn agents can gain considerable power from the crystals they socket in their chest, but the process involves removing their original heart to surgically install the equipment necessary to use the crystal. Not only that, each crystal affects the person mentally in one way or another depending on their theme, and some of them can be pretty negative (e.g. Solid Stone makes its user tongue-tied, and is described as somewhat depressing by Raffaela). How much this is a blessing or a curse depends on the individual, who may see the trade-off as worth it or may get lucky and get a crystal that agrees with them.

These characters are agents for a rather new, but powerful organization - Syn. Syn consists of people that had their hearts replaced with crystals that give them special powers and spend their time searching for new crystals as well as solving problems that were created by crystals gone feral. The story follows a team of three novice Syn agents, warrior princess Muna, tech-guy Macintosh, and rogue Raffaela in their fist missions, where they learn that not everything about their world and their organization is as it first appeared...

!!Webcomic/CrystalHeart contains examples of:

* AdventureGuild: Syn could be regarded as such, since they give their agents dangerous missions to investigate unusual phenomena and find crystals.
* GemHeart: All humans in the setting have gems for hearts, while animals have normal flesh hearts.
* LaResistance: The revolutionaries in Fjordstad. First, they protest the for better rights for miners, but it quickly escalates from there...
* PowerTrio: The Crashing eagles, consisting of Muna, Macintosh and Raffaela. They may occassionally have some problems, but they are TrueCompanions and have remarkable teamwork skills when working together.
* TheRival: Muna has one in Contessa, another team leader of a novice team. They've been trying to one-up each other since their days in training.
* RulesLawyer: Guy. Seen especially in one case when he helps Lily's character to get a crystal she wants from another agent by citing a probable interpretation of the rules - he is portraited with a wig like british lawyers wear them and stops his argument with an "I rest my case".
* TrueCompanions: The Crashing Eagles are teammates, but they are also best friends and willing to risk life and limb for each other.
