* CanadaEh: While the setting was never specified in the actual comic or novel, WordOfGod is that the comic is set in Canada.

[[spoiler:Shadow]] figures out that [[spoiler:Lady Blackheart and Tim's mother]] are the same person after meeting both separately. She keeps this secret for seven years.

*** She somehow is able to sense that her husband has gotten into her hidden stash of cookies in the kitchen from inside their bedroom, and a SweetTooth seems to be common among monsters

* DoesNotLikeShoes: The monsters usually go barefoot, including Shadow.

* AdaptationDrift: The first chapter of the ComicBookAdaptation has more-or-less the same plot as the first chapter of the WebSerialNovel, albeit with some minor changes (such as Tim's two attempts to make a mousetrap in the book being combined into one attempt in the webcomic), but the later chapters go in an entirely different direction only a few plot elements borrowed from the novel. Whereas the novel did a TimeSkip to Tim and Shadow's late teens, the comic stays in their childhood years, with numerous characters getting reworked to fit this new setting (the novel's BigBad Lord Terminus is reduced to a supporting character while his [[TheDragon dragon]] Nightmare is turned into an AlphaBitch). [[spoiler:Chapter 4 subverts this. The TimeSkip finally happens and Terminus usurps is superior to take his throne, setting himself up to be the BigBad again]].

* BareYourMidriff: Midnight's outfit has her midriff bare, as she's only wearing a skirt under her cloak instead of the long shirt that Shadow wears.

** Terminus somehow knows about the practice of human kisses, despite both Shadow's discussions with Tim and Nightmare's reactions to it showing this isn't something monsters usually do. This hints to TheReveal [[spoiler: that he is in a relationship with a human girl]].

* GoingCommando: At the very least Shadow is (to Tim's embarrassment), but given she didn't know ''what'' underwear even is, it's pretty likely all the monsters are.

* IGaveMyWord: [[spoiler: Shadow regarding her promise to not tell Tim about his HalfHumanHybrid status.]]

* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Young Shadow apparently doesn't know the concept of underwear, as she doesn't wear anything else under her clothes, and expresses confusion when Tim points it out.

* InTheHood: Shadow wears one most of the time.

* ShesGotLegs: Nearly all of the female monsters wear outfits that show off their legs.
