* DysfunctionJunction: Carl & his friends don't have it easy.
** Carl is a shy, insecure, and somewhat emotionally fragile kid. He is constantly on the recieving end of Gooper's wrath, has to deal with his rival Sabastian's schemes, and often finds himself injuried one way or another. His biological father left him, and he had a rocky relationship with his strict stepfather's side of the family. When he was enrolled in Toad Town High, he had to adjust to the school, which includes dealing with the... interesting students and school fallacy alike.
** Boo is a literal ghost because of an fatal accident. He lives in poor fanacial circumstances and his parents can barely afford air conditioning.
** Dry Bones has his skin burnt off because of a fire that broke out in his home, killing his mother and leaving his whole family crippled. His father is verbally and emotionally abusive, and his grandfather does nothing but swear and shout at his family. He lives in a household that he is clearly not proud of, so he constantly lies about being rich.
** Blooper has dealt with his father getting eaten by a shark, his older brothers constantly picking on him, and his mother being an alcoholic due to the stress of raising her children. For the longest time, unlike Carl and Dry Bones, he was unsuccesful at entering a relationship with Roxanne, who he had to witness getting treated horribly by Gooper. Blooper is also both figuratively and literally a fish out of water; figuratively, as his own personality often clash with others' ideas, and literrally, as in he is an underwater creature on land who occasionally struggles with communicating with those beyond his kind due to his langauge.

* ArtEvolution: At the beginning of the franchise, sprites specifically created for the series looked somewhat rough at best, and rather unappealing at worst, with one of the main examples being some of the background characters in the first two seasons of ''Carl'' or the backgrounds in the first season of ''Bowser's Koopalings'' being plain. Over the time, [=FreezeFlame22=] gained more experience in making sprites, and since then, Popplio Power, Cowabunga and Oatzimir have also made sprites for the series, resulting in much better-looking and expressive characters and very detailed backgrounds and environments.

* FloatingTimeline: In all of the three shows, characters acknowledge that time passes, but none of them look any older than when their respective series first started.
** It's more notorious in the case of ''Carl''. The titular characters and his friends have been high-schoolers ever since the show started in 2017. Christmas, Halloween and New Year's Eve have all been celebrated, but the only characters that have aged in the show (and only one year at that) are Roxanne, Calvin and Carrie & Sally. If it weren't for the Floating Timeline, the main cast would have graduated by the fifth season of the series.
** In ''Bowser's Koopalings'', the Koopalings are all 14-15, and have remained that age throughout the course of the series. Bowser Jr. on the other hand, turned nine years old in the fifth season of the series. Christmas has also been celebrated many more times than in ''Carl'', and the "Time Travel Trouble" episodes confirm that time does indeed pass, as the present-day in the first episode is 2019, but 2020 in the second and third episodes.
** Completely averted for the ''Wars of Frozen Flames'' mini-series, but that's a given because the series takes place in the late 1400s.

* InterspeciesRomance: Romantic relationships between two people of different species is a completely normal thing in both the Koopa Kingdom and Kongo Island. Major examples include:

** Krusha (a Kritter) used to date Dixie (a Kong).

* LoveTriangle: Used many times throughout the franchise:
** In ''Carl'' we have one involving Blooper, Roxanne and Gooper. Blooper has feelings for Roxanne, who seems to be oblivious to it. Roxanne on her part is being blackmailed by Gooper into dating him, as he's threatening to tell everyone about how she made out with him while dating Tucker (which he pretty much emotionally manipulated her into doing) and ruin her reputation. Roxanne later admits to Blooper that she too has feelings for him, but can't bring herself to dump Gooper out of fear that he'll destroy her reputation and make her lose her friends. Thanks to Carl however, Roxanne gets over her fear and uses Gooper's blackmail against him, confessing on her own accord, dumping Gooper for good, and starting a relationship with Blooper.
** In ''Bowser's Koopalings'' there was a short-lived one with Wendy, Travis and Camilla, which was even the focus of a main episode. Travis wanted to ask Wendy out, but Camilla kept getting in their way in hopes of dating Travis herself. When Travis ends up choosing Wendy, [[KickTheDog Camilla tries to trick Wendy into becoming overweight so that Travis will dump her out of disgust]] [[{{Yandere}} and she can have him all to herself]]. When Wendy learns about this, [[TheDogBitesBack she shaves off Camilla's hair while she's asleep]] in {{Revenge}}. Wendy and Travis then become a couple, and Camilla is shown to resent Wendy for both "stealing" Travis and her hair. Later on, Travis realizes how much of a horrible person Camilla is, rendering her chances of sating him non-existant.
** In ''Donkey Kong Island'' there used to be one with Diddy, Dixie and Krusha. Diddy had a crush on Dixie and would often try to impress her or ask her out, but Krusha felt entitled to her due to a fling they had, which ended up in disaster, so he often tried to win Dixie back or threaten Diddy into backing off. When Krusha is out of the picture and Diddy finally asks Dixie out, she turns him down, but he meets a girl named Kitty shortly afterwards, whom he begins a relationship. This introduces us to a new love triangle consisiting of Dixie, Diddy and Kitty. Turns out Dixie had slowly developed feelings for Diddy, but couldn't bring herself to say anything because she was afraid it would ruin their friendship, and she immediately regrets it when she sees Diddy and Kitty bonding with each other. Another factor is that, unlike her failed relationship with Krusha, Kitty and Diddy's relationship is stable and she doesn't want to selfishly destroy it.
** ''Wars of Frozen Flames'' has this with Sir Rodrick Solberg, Lady Jane Phoenix and Sir Korrin Sylver. Jane had lost her husband and was told that she had to remarry if she wanted to have a source of income, and Rodrick has a crush on her, but couldn't bring himself to marry her because her husband was his older brother Edrick, and he felt that marrying Jane would be disrespecting his memory. Rodrick instead offers to raise Jane's son James when she's forced to give him away to someone at the service of the crown as a ward upon remarriage in accordance to the law of the time, and find a suitable husband for her, which he finds in Korrin. However, Jane and Korrin start developing a strong bond after he empathizes with her and promises to make her happy, which causes Rodrick to feel jealousy towards Korrin.
