[[WMG: Charn was The City in the Sea.]]
* Poe's poem describes a vast and empty city "lying alone" somewhere far away. Like Charn, the unnamed city is devoid of living things, with the art and treasures of the civilization that created it lying undisturbed in a state of eerie silence and stillness. There isn't a breath of wind, and the glowing sea the city borders is as still as a "wilderness of glass". Poe's city is described as "dim", full of shadows, and AlwaysNight, like Charn with its dark sky and dying sun. Poe says the city is so evil Hell "will do it reverence" and the place where Death has his throne, looking down from a tower-- which fits as a description of the evils of Charn's empire and its royal family, and its only living inhabitant being Jadis, who brought death to an entire world (and who does stare down at the city from a tower once awakened). The most notable difference between Charn and the city of the poem is that the city (and perhaps world) of Charn seems to be devoid of water, with its river dried up, whereas Poe's city is on the edge of its AlienSea.
* However, Poe describes the destruction of his city as something that will happen but hasn't happened yet, so it may be that the waters of Charn dried up sometime in the centuries or millennia of Jadis's SuspendedAnimation. Poe says that when the city of his poem sinks into Hell, motion will break its stillness and it will be bathed in "a redder glow"-- which fits with the events of The Magician's Nephew, when the sun had turned red and the ringing of the bell was the first sound heard in Charn in ages, awakening Jadis and bringing the world's final doom.
