Maybe she witnessed a shipwreck during a storm or a sea monster attack, and miraculously enough baby Flapjack somehow emerged unharmed as the sole survivor on wooden planks (or a bed of seaweed), and knowing he wouldn't be able to fend for himself, Bubbie had no choice but to take Flapjack in and raise him as her own. As the event was horrible enough to her, Flapjack asking about it made Bubbie very uncomfortable and narrowly dodged a bullet by telling him a much happier version of how she found him that leaves out the sadder parts.

Years ago, Peppermint Larry was in a happy marriage with a woman and relatively sane. However, a tragedy occurred with ended with the death of his wife. Heartbroken, Larry eventually decided to construct a new wife from candy, all while slowly losing his sanity.

Let's face it, if Candied Island was a real island, there likely would be adventurers that, unlike K'Nuckles and Flapjack, were successful in reaching its shores and plundering its contents. So much so, that there's not one ounce of candy left for anyone else anymore.

Anthony Hope may have actually have been Flapjack's legal name, or Flapjack had to recieve a legal name when the trio first arrived in London.
