While this may be unlikely, since I don't have the evidence for it at the moment, I'd like to pose a scenario: Ellie has fallen in love with another girl. This young woman may or may not be immune like Ellie is. This young woman was murdered or kidnapped, either by a group of malicious people or by people who wanted to experiment on her, similar to what almost happened to Ellie herself. Ellie may or may not have told this young woman her feelings for her before the young woman was murdered or kidnapped. Ellie is now seeking revenge for the death of her lover/one she loved. The group of people may or may not be good people as well, which could further the moral grayness of the revenge story.

If Ellie physically touches a clicker or bloater, however, they will still kill her: the gist will be that she's safe so long as she doesn't get in physical contact with them.
