This is why it was so evil when Mario locked up Donkey Kong in a cage in ''VideoGame/DonkeyKongJr''. Locking up a dangerous animal that has already tried to kill humans would be a heroic act in line with Mario's character (most people would have just put Donkey Kong down), but that game treats him as a villain and has you rescuing that animal. That's because Mario has mistaken Donkey Kong for a gorilla when he's actually demihuman. Putting DK in jail would have been OK, but not in a zoo.

Added hypothesis

Added DiffLines:

[[WMG: Yoshi is a dinosaur, a dragon, AND a Koopa.]]
Long ago, a past Koopa king wanted to create the ultimate Koopa, so he used magic to combine Koopa and dragon DNA. When the resulting creatures (Yoshis) ended up being less fearsome than expected, he set them free. Perhaps Bowser's species is the result of a more successful version of this experiment.

As for where the dinosaur part comes from, this hypothesis assumes that the ''Mario'' universe's dragons are part of the dinosaur clade.

* Furthermore, it's all but confirmed that the Village Leader in ''Paper Mario'' was the Green Yoshi in ''Yoshi's Island''. Super Dragon Yoshi, the current one (that's what he calls himself in the Japanese version of ''SMB4: SMW''), seems to have hatched sometime after the events of ''Yoshi's Island 2''.

The political conflicts between the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa King really happened, but on another planet. The escalation of the conflict eventually destroyed both countries, and the only survivor was Toadsworth. Using the rocket from the Space Zone of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioLand2'', Toadsworth journeyed to the nearest other inhabited planet: Earth. Since he was the last of his kind, he knew his world was doomed, so he decided to create a memorial to Princess Peach and her bravest knights in the form of an interactive demonstration. Taking the name Shigeru Miyamoto, he influenced a Japanese amusements company to create the Super Mario Bros. games to tell a simplified, metaphorical version of his world's history. At least, that was the plan at first; once the simulations started raking in money hand over fist, [[MoneyDearBoy other concerns dominated]].

** The Star Children are a case of OurAngelsAreDifferent, with Mario, Peach and Bowser being the most important.
*** [[MessianicArchetype Mario]]: Jesus / Michael Analogue: Heroic savior and warrior against Bowser.
*** Peach: Jesus / Virgin Mary
*** Luigi: Gabriel: Sometimes sends messages from Peach or Toadsworth.
*** Wario: FallenAngel
*** Donkey Kong: Angel Of Animals
*** Yoshi: Steed of Mario
*** Bowser: SatanicArchetype of the Pantheon, reasons why are in his trope page.

Alternative interpretation of a theory

to:

* Alternatively, Peach is Sloth because of how she often does nothing to escape or avoid being captured even when doing so should be easy (Sunshine and Galaxy come to mind) and her occasional ditziness; Bowser is Lust because of his obsession with Peach; and Donkey Kong - assuming this is the original DK (the one who eventually becomes Cranky Kong) - is Wrath because of his rage-fueled destructive rampages and eventual GrumpyOldMan-ness

He has ''had it'' with these mushroom-fighting stains on his mushroom-fighting jeans. Very few enemies can actually cause him harm, and even then Mario's SanityMeter generally runs out before his health does. That little twirling "death" animation is him going berserk, and the 1-Ups and extra lives are mushroom-shaped cases with a spare pair of overalls in (or a ticket for a free pair), and a pair of overalls costs [[EveryTenThousandPoints 100 coins]].
