Thrax's symptoms don't strongly resemble any real disease. However, he does have a surprising amount in common with the disease in ''Literature/TheStand'', which is nicknamed Captain Trips. Both initially manifest as symptoms identical to the common cold, and later mutate into more serious symptoms characterized by, among other things, a very high fever. The final stage of Captain Trips resembles a combination of pneumonic plague and cancer, but since Frank doesn't show these symptoms it can be assumed that Thrax was killed before he had the chance to cause them.
Since Frank's immune system was able to fight off Thrax, it stands to reason that he would be one of the survivors when the disease becomes a global plague.

[[WMG: Thrax is ricin.]]
In the world of this film (and the tv series), it's not just cells that are sentient. For example, Drix is a literal pill. Thrax's plan is also very different from that of an actual disease, since his whole goal is killing his host. Also, Thrax looks very different from the other bacteria and viruses (they are all round in shape while Thrax has sharp edges). Then, look at the early symptoms: common cold, random muscle aches, nausea, lethargy... then he starts to just crash. This is almost exactly how the poison ricin works, with even the timeframe being roughly accurate (48hrs to a few days). Even a small amount is lethal, and though it is questionable that Frank's egg got contaminated by ricin, it still makes as much sense as a bioweapon being at the zoo.
