As early as season 3, Lois had hinted that she intended to pick Malcolm's future wife for him, much like she'd planned out his entire life for him. Well, Lois was quite fond of Jessica because she reminded her of herself and thus fit her ideal vision of a perfect wife for Malcolm. This also explains why she was so doting and accomodating towards Jessica while she was staying over. However, during the episode "Secret Boyfriend" Jessica makes it clear to Malcolm that she doesn't have feelings for him (admittedly after pretending she did to manipulate him, even if it was for the best). Not-so-coincidentally, this just happened to be Jessica's final appearance. Once Malcolm relayed the story to Lois, she cut Jessica out of their lives despite her terrible situation at home.

And if anything, the family will be expecting some sort of inheritance from her or the money in her possession to become available. And of course Ida, being the selfish heartless hag that she is, will either bequeath her possessions to whoever defeated her in battle or have it in her will that she be buried with her stuff so nobody can have it.
