** Stench > Spooky is actually something of a trope; vampires and garlic, for example. Or incense; stench covers all kinds of unpleasantly strong smells, not just traditionally rotten ones; even a cloying perfume probably counts as stench.

** There might be less-literal aspects here too. During the War, sleaze is associated with privilege and money in the forms of frat boys, while stench is associated with harmony and poverty in the form of hippies--the latter is also supported by how the bums in the Overgrown Lot are stench-aligned.
