Or rather he was. He knew his writing would bring about the end of the world as we know it, so he wrote himself as a different character instead because the truth is, he likes the world and does not believe that the eldritch abominations that were telling him what to write had his best intentions in mind. He convinced the creatures from the beyond that films in the modern era gather more viewers than books gather readers. So in his new life he started with his cult classics and eventually led to Film/InTheMouthOfMadness as a response to the voices in his head telling him how to write the events so that all would follow the path and become insane, but as with most of his works it only really achieved a small cult following and so he subverted the plans of the ancient things. It all came crashing down with The Ghosts of Mars (the final attempt to bring about the horror) and since then he has lived a peaceful-ish life without the voices from another dimension telling him what to do! We're saved!
* Also, In The Mouth Of Madness was the best example of H P Lovecraft put to film I have ever seen.

** I'd go Pestilence for the Thing, being the ultimate virus, War for Satan and Anti-god, as they inspire a hate plague. Sutter Cane doesn't really fit though.
*** Alternately, they all take place out of chronological order. Satan was trying to bring Anti-God into earth, and who turned out to be Sutter Cane. Sutter Cane was trying to bring the Great Old Ones to earth by breaking the fourth wall with his reality warping powers. Finally, The Thing just happens to be the first of the Great Old Ones to break through, and after the events of the movie, more Old Ones, possibly even worse than the Thing will be emerging all over earth.
