Or rather he was. He knew his writing would bring about the end of the world as we know it, so he wrote himself as a different character instead because the truth is, he likes the world and does not believe that the eldritch abominations that were telling him what to write had his best intentions in mind. He convinced the creatures from the beyond that films in the modern era gather more viewers than books gather readers. So in his new life he started with his cult classics and eventually led to Film/InTheMouthOfMadness as a response to the voices in his head telling him how to write the events so that all would follow the path and become insane, but as with most of his works it only really achieved a small cult following and so he subverted the plans of the ancient things. It all came crashing down with The Ghosts of Mars (the final attempt to bring about the horror) and since then he has lived a peaceful-ish life without the voices from another dimension telling him what to do! We're saved!
* Also, In The Mouth Of Madness was the best example of H P Lovecraft put to film I have ever seen.

Or rather he was. He knew his writing would bring about And Sutter Cane WAS H P Lovecraft! But books did not reach that many people back in the end of day, and H P Lovecraft's visions and writings were not so well received in the world as we know it, era they were written, so he wrote rewrote himself as a different new character instead because the truth is, he likes the world and does not believe that the eldritch abominations that were telling him what to write had his best intentions in mind. He convinced the creatures from the beyond that became John Carpenter. Of course films in being the modern era gather more viewers than books gather readers. So in new medium to reach the largest audience was all part of the plan, unfortunately, his new life he started with his cult classics films were not mainstream enough to be massive blockbusters and eventually led to Film/InTheMouthOfMadness as a response to reach the voices in his head telling him how maximum number of people possible to write cause the events so that all would follow the path and apocalypse. Maybe he will become insane, but as with most of his works it only really achieved a small cult following and so he subverted the plans of the ancient things. It all came crashing down with The Ghosts of Mars (the final attempt to bring about the horror) and since then he has lived a peaceful-ish life without the voices from another dimension telling him what to do! Added DiffLines:

** I'd go Pestilence for the Thing, being the ultimate virus, War for Satan and Anti-god, as they inspire a hate plague. Sutter Cane doesn't really fit though.
*** Alternately, they all take place out of chronological order. Satan was trying to bring Anti-God into earth, and who turned out to be Sutter Cane. Sutter Cane was trying to bring the Great Old Ones to earth by breaking the fourth wall with his reality warping powers. Finally, The Thing just happens to be the first of the Great Old Ones to break through, and after the events of the movie, more Old Ones, possibly even worse than the Thing will be emerging all over earth.

* Yeah, but which ones? Obviously the bacteria is Pestilence, but what are the other two? They can't both be death.

* Wait, all three films are referred to as "the apocalypse trilogy"... would that make Sutter Cane, the alien bacteria and the titular prince of darkness three out of the four horsemen?
