[[WMG: Marley really ''is'' the South Bend Shovel Slayer.]]
There's no concrete evidence to suggest that he isn't. When his personal life is brought up, [[UnreliableNarrator Kevin only hears his side of the story]], and he doesn't even give an explicit denial then. Serial killers tend to exhibit a ton of toxic or abusive traits aside from those that directly tie to murderous acts, which would logically lead to familial troubles like Marley's. He also seems ''very'' attached to his shovel, even using it as a weapon against Harry.

[[WMG: Gus Polinski, John Candy's character character, is Satan.]]

[[WMG: Alternatively to the above, John Candy's character is actually an angel.]]
Alternatively, John Candy's character and his group of Polka players were actually angels and were actually on their way to Milwaukee to perform a mission from God. If you watch the scene where Kate says she would sell her soul to the Devil himself to get home, the way he reacts seems like he's disgusted at the thought that she would sell her soul to the Devil. So, before the Devil had a chance to show up and make an offer, he offers Kate a lift in the van. The stories he tells about the other players, he makes up the backstories for them to make Kate feel better about the situation she was in because she blamed herself for leaving Kevin at home, and it appears to help her.

The movie looks like it would have been made during UsefulNotes/TheHaysCode, where it is highly unlikely that an AxCrazy killer like Johnny would have been allowed to pull a KarmaHoudini. A prequel might have been a way to bring the character back in spite of that though.

Perhaps there really was a South Bend Shovel Slayer but it was {{Misblamed}} on Marley due to his family arguement. The roaring from the basement may be a residual haunting of a murder that took place in the basement but isn't spoken of due to its brutality.

Perhaps Old Man Marley is some of angel or good spirit, protecting Kevin from harm that ''can'' befall him until he accepts his fate and moves on. (Sprinkling salt on the sidewalk could, under this theory, be seen as some sort of attempt to protect Kevin).

** Outside of Kevin and the house, there's Kate's conversation with Gus on the van. She asks him if he's ever left his kid alone; he said he did it once, all day, in a funeral parlor.[[note]]implying his child died[[/note]] She then says they shouldn't talk about this; he reminds her that ''she'' brought it up, and she says she's sorry. Perhaps the reason she doesn't want to talk about this is that Kevin is actually dead as well.

** Outside of Kevin and the house, Kate is the only member of the family who reacts realistically to realizing she left an 8-year-old child at home. Everyone else tries to calm her down; Frank tells her he forgot his reading glasses too. Maybe they've all accepted Kevin's death except her.

** Within the house, Kevin is afraid of going either up to the third floor or down to the basement. As ''The Daily Beast'' notes, the symbolism there is rather obvious.
** Kevin is particularly afraid of the basement furnace, which he imagines to be calling his name. Perhaps in real life, his body was cremated?
** This would explain the Wet Bandits' invulnerability to Kevin's booby traps (as well as how many of them he comes up with and sets up in one day): ''They'' aren't human, either. They are demons come to take Kevin away to hell.
** And this explains other physical improbabilities such as Kevin's toboggan ride down the stairs and out the front door (in real life the distance between the stair case and the door would cause it to stop from the friction), his ability to outrun the Wet Bandits' van, and keep that towel from falling while he's lip syncing.

Seriously, many of the traps Kevin sets in the first two films would be lethal or crippling to anyone who doesn't have Wolverine's healing factor from the X-Men: paint cans to the head, bricks to the head, irons to the face, kerosene explosions, falls from 2 stories or more, electrocution, being crushed by heavy objects, and the list goes on. If Harry and Marv were mere mortals, they'd both be dead by the end of the first movie or would be in wheelchairs in the sequel.

There seems to be a decent age gap between Kevin and his siblings. Between that, the general lack of affection/interest from his parents and the outright hostility from his siblings, one could infer that Kevin's birth was not planned.
