As Marlow is an unreliable narrator, he may have been lying at the death of Kurtz. My theorie is: after talking with Kurtz when he tried to escape from the Director and others Marlow is blinded by the promises of money and power, so he let Kurtz ran into the rainforest. Then he told the Director that he had died. Kurtz was housed by the natives and he continued raising ivory. Later he gave the ivory to Marlow, who exported it to Britain and exchanged it for goods in account of a percentage. And the ivory traffic continues...
