In the opening of the game, Mickey/Minnie is playing catch with his/her friends until Goofy tosses the ball and it hits them on the head before Pluto runs off to fetch it himself. Perhaps in reality, they were knocked out and taken to bed to recover, resulting in them dreaming of the entire game's events, and Pluto sticks around the comatose mouse until they manage to wake up by licking him/her awake.
