Maybe not all the catacombs, but just a few are behind this plot. There is a theory that states war stimulates an economy. However the nobles of Arcadia fight as hard as they possibly can to prevent it. So it's up to the catacombs to bring upon a war where they win no matter what.

It's mentioned on the story page that Eve tore Lilith into pieces as punishment for giving humans magic. Since Cog's magic's nature is of a healing sort, maybe if he became proficient enough he'd be able to "heal" the damage, kind of like some weird glow-y orange supernatural super glue.

It's been noted on the story page on the site that most hybrids "are almost indistinguishable from humans, aside from their larger size" (which may apply to even those descended from hybrid stock). This could explain why Theodoric seems pretty large for a human and is able to withstand Leo's handshake without wincing (as opposed to Cog, who ends up with a dismayed expression on his face post Leo encounter), as well as why the Eberharts have red eyes and the animal-themed last name (Eberhart meaning "brave boar")

[[WMG: Cog will end up being the catalyst that causes the war between Mercia and Arcadia]]
It's been mentioned that Cog has an almost-photographic memory for anything on paper (though it's possible that that's no longer canon). As Alexander's assistant he'll probably end up having access to Arcadia's blueprints for airships at some point and might end up sending copies back to Mercia (maybe out of resentment towards Alexander for blackmailing him, etc). Arcadia's superiority when it comes to airship designs is one of the main reasons that the kingdom has yet to fall to Mercian forces and thus become part of the empire, so it stands to reason that losing the upper hand would make Arcadia more vulnerable to Mercia, and vice versa.

[[WMG: Gaz got his position as a main character through blackmail.]]
Chikuto has mentioned that way back in the day, Gaz was originally intended to be a minor character who was just there to provide information and insight on Arcadia's class issues, along with some comic relief. Nowadays, of course, he's one of the central characters, and a very powerful figure in the background of Arcadia's social and political scene by way of his wealth of blackmail on almost all of the nobility. According to Chikuto, this happened naturally over the course of further developing his character and place in the setting, but what if the real reason is that Gaz has some sort of blackmail on the author herself and used it as leverage to secure himself a more prominent role in the story? This could also explain why, at one point, Chikuto seemed to draw Gaz more than almost anyone else: his terms included that he must have an adequate public presence before his appearance in the comic itself so he would have the opportunity to establish a hold over the fans in the meantime (which he [[EnsembleDarkhorse certainly did]]).
There's also a clear answer for why Gaz wouldn't have just insisted on being the main character, if we take this theory as true: To do that, he would have had to usurp the positions of main characters like Alexander, who Gaz fears for being too powerful for even him to control. Much better, in that case, for him to stay in the shadows of the more famous members of the main cast, unobserved and able to operate as he pleases.

[[WMG: Magic is detrimental to use because it is not owned by humans.]]
If the Lilith and Eve story of the creation of magic is true, that'd mean that humans with the ability to use it do not actually own the magic -- Lilith does. And since we've seen how magic works -- it kind of returns to the person who used it when said person is done with it -- the magic is trying to return to Lilith, but can't because it's tied to it's human owner. As such, it tries to kill and drive insane it's human owner so that it can return to Lilith.
