* Alternatively, going with the 'the aliens aren't invaders' theory above, the alien was either trying to warn Alex that his civilization would view Earth as the first aggressors and attack in retribution, or was trying to scare him into backing off.

** I don't really see that as proving that the aliens are malicious so much as reinforcing that it was a huge miscommunication. The aliens crash into the ocean. They panic and set up a forcefield to protect themselves while they figure out how to signal help. They realise that there's a native fleet of war ships pointed right at them, so they use a non-lethal display of force (the sonic boom) to warn the locals to stay back. Their sensors show that the warships guns are loaded and pointed at thim (they have no reason to believe that it's a warning shot, in their eyes THEY gave the warning shot.) They then assume that the native population is hostile and go about destroying infrastucture while trying to minimalize casualties as much as possible (and the movie clearly shows several times that they only attack immediate threats, they even ignore unarmed military personel aboard the warships shooting at them) so the local military can't mobilize against them while they're trying to get off this godforsaken rock.
