**** On some items, the company name “Alterra” is written. Alterra is a company from VideoGame/NaturalSelection2, also developed by Unknown Worlds. [[spoiler: Hidden log files on the Habitat Update’s promotional webpage actually revealed that the two games take place in the same universe.]]

***** For a different kind of ShoutOut, the game's developers have done a couple for people who've made popular Lets Plays of the game, including LetsPlay/JackSepticEye; when they first introduced Power Cells for the Submarine, the description included a literal ShoutOut saying “just for you, jacksepticeye". They've even made a specially-designed Hull Plate with Jack's motif in honor of him(among other people).

They also look similar to the spider creatures from Film/LostInSpace, both having circular bodies, being hostile to the protagonist, and [[spoiler:inhabiting a derelict habitation ship]]

* CoolStarship: The Aurora, [[spoiler:which ends up exploding, giving you entry, and placing a burden on you to repair the reactor containment field]].

Subnautica is a game created by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, creators of the famous Half-Life mod Natural Selection.

The game is set on an alien ocean world, the player being the unnamed sole survivor of a crashed terraforming ship named the Aurora.

* HomeBase: You can make underwater bases using the Builder.

* ThreateningShark: The Stalkers, Bone Sharks, and Sand Sharks, obviously.

* CoolStarship: The Aurora.

* GoingCritical: The Aurora’s reactor explodes, releasing lethal radiation which will kill you without a Radiation Suit.

Subnautica contains examples of the following tropes:

* SpaceWhale: Reefbacks, being the equivalent to blue whales but looking nothing like a whale. Also appears in the concept art.

* ShoutOut: The Sea Emperor has characteristics of some of Film/PacificRim’s Kaiju.
