* SequelDifficultySpike: Minor, but the ''Battle'' port and the re-release significantly raised (read: doubled) the requirements for an A-Rank in Eggman's final level, Cosmic Wall, as the point requirement in the Dreamcast version is extremely easy to reach.

Added DiffLines:

** Not necessarily harder but considerably more annoying, the radar in the hunting stages was changed from ''Sonic Adventure'' so that it only detects each item in sequence as opposed to all three simultaneously. This means that you could be very close to the second item but because you haven't collected the first, you'd never know it.

This is the first game in the series -- bar racing and party games -- where you get to play as the villains, and by extension, the first where you get to play as Dr. Eggman. This game also introduced Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat, both of whom would become series mainstays. The structure has also been altered from ''Sonic Adventure'': instead of taking selecting a character and guiding them through a HubLevel to access each Action Stage, the Action Stages are all sequential with the player selecting a side and playing through all three gameplay types in a single story. There are no hubs and the story is told as a cohesive whole for each side as opposed to one character experiencing the story from their own point of view. Beat both perspectives and you unlock the "Last" story, which brings the story of both sides to its climax.

* ContrivedCoincidence: Shadow the Hedgehog just happens to not only be a super fast hedgehog with an identical move set to Sonic, but has an uncanny resemblance to Super Sonic and is also able to go super like Sonic does, despite his creation predating Sonic's birth by 35 years. ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'' at least gave a retroactive explanation for this--Gerald Robotnik, Shadow's creator, had researched Angel Island extensively in the past, likely being inspired to base Shadow's appearance on the Hidden Palace mural foreshadowing Super Sonic's battle with Eggman (along with the statues of Sonic in Hydrocity) at the end of the ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles''. The presence of Artificial Chaos and the mockup Master Emerald Shrine inside the ARK support this as well.
