* MagikarpPower: The Kol Battleship isn't that strong fresh out of the drydock, despite the glowing description in lore. It has poor antimatter reserves, unflattering damage and can be beaten by most other capital ships in a duel. With enough levels and antimatter upgrades, though, it becomes able to use its abilities much more freely, dramatically improving its power, and Finest Hour can turn a fight around.

** The Advent race as a whole can be considered this. Early game, their economy is the worst out of all the factions, most of their units aside from their most basic frigates are fairly expensive and later in the research tree than most other factions, and their game plan usually boils down to spamming their individually weak but cheap light frigate to contest their opponents. However, should an Advent player reach the late-game, their fleets, when properly managed, are arguably the single most powerful threat on the field, with strong, synergistic abilities, and their primary weakness (relative fragility of their ships) all but removed due to a slew of potent support ships, leaving them with a borderline unkillable blob that does massive damage from a greater range than the rest of the factions. The only silver-lining for their opponents is that their economy late-game is still the worst of all the factions, and that precision targeting of their support ships can cripple their entire fleet, though this is still not an easy task.

* FantasticAbleism: The Advent treats people who are unable to receive telepathy, whom they ironically refer to as the "Silent Ones", as social pariahs.
