Compared to the experimental approach of the series throughout the 2000s -- a knock-on effect of series creator Creator/MasahiroSakurai's 2003 departure from HAL -- ''Return to Dream Land'' offers a modernized take on the gameplay style of ''VideoGame/KirbySuperStar'', with far more action-oriented gameplay marked by a return to wide movesets for copy abilities. Additionally, four new copy abilities are introduced (Water, Whip, Leaf, and Spear), as are Super Abilities, enhanced versions of various powers that can each use [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros Final Smash-like]] [[LimitBreak attacks]]. At the same time, however, the game also maintains the puzzle-solving elements and storytelling style of games like ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand3'' and ''Kirby 64'', more cleanly consolidating them with the aforementioned action-oriented approach. since super star is more generally agreed to be the codifier while Rt DL just refined that into the modern formula, i'm going to remove this

* FranchiseCodifier: After years of experimentation, this game codified the definitive formula for later entries by mixing the elaborate action of ''VideoGame/KirbySuperStar'' with the puzzle and story-heavy direction of ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand2'', ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand3'', and ''VideoGame/Kirby64TheCrystalShards''. While the groundwork was slowly being laid out during the 2000s, it was this title in 2011 that cohesively solidified it, setting the standard for subsequent ''Kirby'' games.
