* FinalExamBoss: Miracle Matter, who has a different form for every base ability in the game, and the only way to harm him is to damage him with the same ability he's using. Usually it's better to just suck up the leftovers of his attack and spit them back at him, which is the only way to damage him in Boss Battles mode.

** While on the topic of [[NoticeThis that breakable multicolored terrain]], there are notably a couple of these Crystal-concealing obstacles that do ''not'' follow the "use these ability colors" rule you've been following for most of the game. The first is a conspicuous rock in 4-4 that requires, of all things, [[spoiler:an Ice ability of any kind to break -- this is despite that the rock in question is ''[[ViolationOfCommonSense inside of a volcano and can withstand high explosives]]]]''. The second is an ice stalactite in 5-1 that requires [[spoiler:any Burning ability to destroy; while this ''actually'' makes sense, it's still a sharp departure from the established formula, with your only other possible hint being if you somehow managed to get the 4-4 Crystal beforehand]].

* LaterInstallmentWeirdness: This game notably gives the formula of Shimomura-directed titles a complete overhaul. The Animal Friends are dropped in favor of the ability to combine Copy Abilities, the visual presentation switches from a [=2D=] format to a [=2.5D=] one, the setting covers multiple planets rather than being limited to one, and the game's cast is much more diverse and sees more elaborate characterizations, due to the game putting a greater focus on storytelling. This game is also the only Shimomura title where Dark Matter is explicitly shown to be the main villain from the beginning; Dark Matter was discussed in the ''Dream Land 2'' manual and mentioned in the ''Dream Land 3'' manual, but didn't show up in-person until the very end of those games, and when Dark Matter ''did'' appear in ''Dream Land 3''[='s=] opening, the fact that it ''was'' Dark Matter was only implied and not outright shown or stated.

* MonsterCompendium: In the form of enemy cards Kirby can earn only in the jump game after levels. They just show the enemies' names, their animated models, and which power (if any) they give Kirby, and there are eighty-one cards in all. Oh yeah, and the card that Kirby gets is random every time, meaning it's possible to get duplicates. [[FakeLongevity Good luck trying to]] [[GottaCatchEmAll get them all]] (though there's a bit of humor to be found in this, as the fact that the card you get is randomized means that it's possible for to get [[spoiler:[[TrueFinalBoss 0[[superscript:2]]]]]] as your first card).
