Moving to Contra Hard Corps page.

* DubInducedPlothole: Owing to European censorship, Hard Corp was drastically changed story-wise when it became Probotector. There were small changes that ultimately altered basically nothing (such as the main characters being robots), but the villains got greatly overhauled.
** Deadeye Joe is a cyborg working for Colonel Bahamut. While this remains consistent, he is now the Alien Commander (as Colonel Bahamut is now an alien). Following his appearance in stage 1, the Alien Commander completely drops out of the game and never reappears. Even though all of Deadeye Joe's boss fights are still in the game; the Alien Commander is apparently gone. He's even replaced in the train cutscene where he saves the main characters just to duel them later, except this time the Sky Police inexplicably show up and break the main character(s) out.
** Doctor Geo Mandrake also unceremoniously drops out of the game. Originally he appears in the end of Stage 1, and warns that the Research Center is being attacked. He also appears in Stage 2 stating he's glad you arrived. While this remains true, all of his subsequent appearances are removed. He is never revealed to be working with Colonel Bahamut, and the fight with the Monster Genesis Machine happens without him present. The fights against Doctor Spider and the Mach 777 still happen, but Doctor Spider's existence is never explained (you enter a room and he's there whereas before Dr Mandrake transformed into him), and the Mach 777 is an unmanned robot attacker.
** Colonel Bahamut is still the BigBad and main Antagonist, but rarther than being a former world hero turned militant dictator, in Probotector he's an invading alien general. Most of his dialogue was entirely removed, and the NonstandardGameOver where you can join him has been removed from the game.

* DubInducedPlotlineChange: The biggest reason that there was a split between the English and Japanese timelines for Contra is because the only story people had for the English versions came from the instruction manuals. Unfortunately, the manuals were written by people that didn't seem to have actually played the game and gave it an almost ComicalTranslation. Enemies were given names like "Jagger Froid" and "Babalu Destructoid Mechanism". In other words, they made things up, leading to endless confusion.

It's now YMMV

* NintendoHard:
** The NES games are notoriously difficult and were responsible for introducing American players to the Konami cheat code Inputting a sequence of buttons at the title screen awarded the player with 30 lives, which were seen as a necessity to enjoy the games back when save states weren't available.
** Super Contra (specifically the arcade version), Contra: Hard Corps, and Contra 4 are considered to be even harder than the NES games, with the fourth game's manual even treating its harsh learning curve as a point of pride.
** When Hard Corps was released in Japan, they added a health bar and gave players unlimited continues.

* ArtisticLicensePhysics: There is no way that a helicopter can fly into space, especially as the rotors (or any VTOL powered systems) are not designed to function on low-orbit, with only RuleOfCool being a plausible explanation as to how it works. This is even the case with the transport plane in Shattered Soldier, as the design means that it can only normally operate on gravity.

* WeWillUseLasersInTheFuture: It's the 27th century lasers (and in later years other energy weapons) have become an increasingly important part of the human arsenal as tankbusters and a great counter for especially tough units. This is especially prevalent in Contra Returns where most of the best weapons are energy weapons and many of the more exotic firearms had their physical bullets replaced with energy bolts when upgraded. One unique machine gun even gets an upgrade where it can sporadically fire a LaserCutter beam.
