** As per-usual, magic and trap cards that were staples in the TCG that still have their effects here are just as useful as they were in real life. Pot of Greed, Raigeki, Torrential Tribute, ect, ect...

Added DiffLines:

* {{Nerf}}: Pot of Greed was nerfed in this game and the next as its infamous draw two cards was changed to only if you have enough room in your hand, meaning only three cards or less.

* TalkToEveryone: Certain {{Event Flag}}s will only trigger by talking to non-plot important NPCs around the game world who will tip the player off to the location of certain characters or events. Even if the player already knows a character will show up there, the character will only appear once talking to the NPC.

Added DiffLines:

* AntiGrinding: Normal [=NPCs=] will only give the player +5 to their deck capacity limit, and duelist level increases are so minuscule that it's not worth grinding them for that. Beating a plot important NPC for the first time increases deck capacity +30 and gives you a hefty duelist level increase, but afterwards they usually will only give you +10 at most and the duelist level increase being as miniscule as fighting non-important [=NPCs=]. This is to encourage the player to continue the plot and to build their deck in a way that isn't just stacking high ATK level 4 monsters.

Added DiffLines:

* RPGElements: The game has two such elements to keep the player from stacking their deck with powerful monsters/spells/traps. The deck capacity limit, which you cannot go over and really good monsters usually having high costs, and duelist level, which flat-out prevents the player from adding certain cards to their deck until they're of the appropriate level. Both can be increased by beating people in duels, with plot important characters usually giving higher deck capacity expansions/duelist level increases.

Not actually mechanics in the game

* LevelScaling: ''[[InvertedTrope Inverted.]]'' If your duelist level is lower than your opponent's, you'll have a ''much'' harder time getting your better cards, with them usually being near the end of your deck. Meanwhile, if it's higher, you'll get your best cards as soon as the duel starts. [[SelfImposedChallenge It's actually a popular self imposed challenge]] to do a LowLevelRun of the game, as this mechanic requires you to be far more strategic and rely on trap and magic cards more.
* TheMagicPokerEquation: There appears to be a mechanic like this in the game, where the higher your dueling level is in comparison to your opponent, the better the cards are you generally tend to draw. The lower your level is in comparison, the harder it is for you to draw what you need to win.

* TheUnchosenOne: The main character has nothing to do with Marik's plans. The Ghouls aren't targeting you at first, they're targeting everyone in the tournament. Marik is just annoyed that you keep winning. Subverted when Ishizu makes Kaiba and you compete for Obelisk before the finals [[ForWantOfANail instead of giving it to him before the tournament begins]] - and ''you'' [[TheChosenOne win it]].
