The game[[labelnote:*]]except the Xbox 360 version[[/labelnote]] received an expansion called ''Wild Run'' on November 17, 2015. Focusing on a multiplayer racing festival held throughout the United States called The Summit, with its primary hub located at Bonneville Salt Flats, it expanded on off-road racing across the United States and introduced [[CoolBike motorcycles]] to the game, as well as dragsters, drift cars, and monster trucks. There was also a ''massive'' graphical overhaul made available to everyone upon its release. A second expansion, ''Calling All Units'', was released on November 29, 2016, allowing players to play as the cops with a variety of weapons such as [=EMPs=]. After ''Calling All Units'' was released, ''Wild Run'' was delisted and it is now included with the second expansion as a bonus. Those who purchased ''Wild Run'' before its delisting got free Crew Credits (the game's premium currency) for their troubles.

** Street: Unlocked in Detroit after the prologue, this is the first spec unlocked in the game, with basic upgrades. Nothing too flashy.
** Dirt: Unlocked in New York at Level 10, this spec is best-suited for dirt roads, but doesn't fare particularly well on tarmac.
** Performance: Unlocked in Miami at Level 20, this spec heavily tunes the car to maximize its performance on asphalt roads, but is flat-out terrible off-road.
** Raid: Unlocked in Las Vegas at Level 30, this spec makes the car near-godlike off-road, and makes it a MightyGlacier for better or for worse.
** Circuit: Unlocked in Los Angeles at Level 40, this is the final spec unlocked in the game: it transforms the car into a professional race car with unthinkable asphalt grip and the highest stats in the game, but has the lowest durability among all car specs. While it is stated in game that this spec is illegal to drive on open roads, the vehicles of this spec can be driven anywhere without risking a police pursuit [[RuleOfFun largely to avoid annoying the player]].

*** Monster Trucks: Big tires equals big stunts. Used for special stunting events, players can control how they flip in the air.
*** Dragsters: Ridiculously fast, but obviously meant to be driven in only straight lines. [[DrivingStick Manual transmission]] is mandatory for this spec's events.
*** Drift Cars: Made for sliding around corners easily; whether they're on slick city streets or downhill mountain roads, this spec is of course used to get massive points in drift events.

If some of those studios' names haven't tipped you off already, all versions are published by Creator/{{Ubisoft}}. The game was released worldwide on December 2, 2014 to mixed reviews.

* AbsurdlyLowLevelCap: Your Driver Level caps at 50. You'll probably hit that level at the end of the story mode, or even well beforehand if you do a lot of skills early on.

* AchievementSystem: Along with the standard achievement systems that are dependent on the platform the game is played on, as well as Ubisoft's [=uPlay=] rewards system, ''The Crew'' has its own internal awards system where players are rewarded for completing various in-game side tasks. Completing them earns players "awards points", which give out payment bonuses of "bucks"[[note]]the game's non-microtransactional currency named after the US dollar's famous nickname[[/note]] based on a percentage after completing missions, skills, and stunts. Completing certain packs of sixteen awards also give players special {{Vanity License Plate}}s with either real state license plate designs (without having to buy a car from a dealer for a "common" plate) or designs based on other countries' plates.

* Bowdlerization: A lot of the in-game radio's songs are censored in order to keep the +12 rating.

* UnwinnableByMistake: The Freedrive Professional award set was originally not able to be completed because one of the awards was bugged. The award in question, Independence Play, requires players to play the game on July 4 ([[UsefulNotes/AmericanHolidays American Independence Day]]), but [[http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1205883-EMERGENCY-independence-day-doesn-t-work-in-the-game-the-crew players were not be able to unlock the award on the day in question when it came around in 2015.]] [[http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1210564-4th-of-July-Award The issue was taken care of after the date and the award was made unlockable on August 4, 2015 to make up for the bug.]] Now that the fix date was passed, players will have to wait until the next Fourth of July in 2016 to unlock it.

* [[spoiler:BigfootSasquatchAndYeti]]: [[spoiler:Bigfoot]] appears as an EasterEgg in the game, which will unlock an award if you [[spoiler:find him wandering in the Northern Cascades]].

* UsefulNotes/{{Chicago}}: The second main city in the Midwest zone, after Detroit, making the Midwest the only zone in the game with two main cities. (Every other zone in the game has just one main city and one or two other major cities.) The Windy City is also where Alex meets Herschel Craig, the city's V2, after falling out of favor with Troy.

* UsefulNotes/DFWMetroplex: Dallas is one of the major cities in The South zone. It's here where Coburn reveals himself after secretly getting Alex to work for him, and where [[spoiler:Roxanne]] first contacts Alex in secret to warn him that [[spoiler:Cam called for a police ambush against him]].
* UsefulNotes/{{Detroit}}: The first major city in the game, as well as the Midwest zone, and Alex's hometown. It's at the Motor City where his brother Dayton is killed and where the plot begins. Troy is also the V2 for this city after the TimeSkip.

* UsefulNotes/LosAngeles: L.A. is the main city for the West Coast zone, and last main city that Alex has to go to story-wise in the game: he goes there to participate in the 5-10 Face-Off, which pits him against every other V2, V4, and V6 in the States, and finally settle his score with Shiv.

* UsefulNotes/{{Miami}}: The main city of The South, Alex goes there to restore the 5-10's dominion there, which was usurped by [[LoneWolfBoss Cameron Rockport]].

* UsefulNotes/{{Nashville}}: The Tennessee capital appears in the game as part of The South zone, but it's only represented as a minor city. Oddly though, the name is typed in-game in all-caps as if it's one of the game's major cities (which are all rendered in all-caps). Alex first meets Cam face-to-face here for a race.

* UsefulNotes/NewMexico: Is a region in the Mountain States zone. The game puts it ''way'' closer to the Gulf of Mexico than it actually is. UsefulNotes/SantaFe is a major city in the zone, while Roswell is a minor city.

* UsefulNotes/OtherCitiesInTexas: Amarillo and New Braunfels appear in The South, while El Paso appears in the Mountains States just west of The South.

* UsefulNotes/SanFrancisco: It returns from ''VideoGame/DriverSanFrancisco'' as a major city for the West Coast zone, although it's smaller than how it appeared in that game.
* UsefulNotes/SantaFe: UsefulNotes/NewMexico's capital is one of the major cities of the Mountain States zone. Amusingly, the entire city is its lone district (the location indicator next to the minimap says "SANTA FE, SANTA FE" when you're in the city).
* UsefulNotes/{{Seattle}}: Also one of the major West Coast cities in the game.

* UsefulNotes/StLouis: The last major city of the Midwest zone, the only city in that zone to ''not'' be a main city (since Chicago fills a dual role with Detroit), and the place where players can buy bikes if they own ''Wild Run''. However, it is the first city outside Detroit that Alex goes to in the story. He is sent there by Troy to take over the city for Detroit... going as far as being forced to kill the V2 there as well. Alex doesn't do so, but...
