** Fighter: Luke and Vader are the most physical fighters, using a close-range weapon and relying on their Force jumps to maneuver.
** Mage: Leia and Palpatine/Sidious specialize in support abilities, spawning health and power-ups for teammates while also spawning EliteMooks to help in battle.
** Thief: Han and Boba are hit-and-run marksmen, and both explicitly are criminals InUniverse.

* SquishyWizard: Emperor Palpatine[=/=]Darth Sidious has no lightsaber, relying exclusively on The Force. However, this trope only applies to his lack of physical attacks; his Force-Lightning-based attacks are nothing to sneeze at, his Force Dash gives him a downright scary burst of speed, he has good health/defense, and his Imperial Resources ability can even heal nearby allies (or, of course, [[ItsAllAboutMe himself]]).

** The ''Outer Rim'' expansion brings in Nien Nunb as the new hero and Greedo as the new villain, who are comparatively obscure to the other characters in the Original Trilogy (though Greedo is infamous for the whole "Han Shot First" deal).
** "Bespin" and "Death Star" give us Dengar and Bossk, respectively. No one expected characters who only briefly appeared in ''The Empire Strikes Back'' to appear in the DLC, though the two bounty hunters had supporting roles during certain arcs of ''The Clone Wars''.
** Not many people were expecting to be able to play as R2-D2 in the Death Star DLC.

* FriendlyFireproof: The player can accidentally kill themselves with certain explosives, but teammates can be hit with massive thermal implosions and littered with laser fire without any visible harm done.

** Chewbacca has the lowest speed of any hero, to the point even his lasers are able to be dodged, but makes up for it by being able to use his Bowcaster to fire volleys of laser bolts that can easily mow down enemies in close quarters and having a massive shockwave attack.

* WeakToFire: Chewbacca takes a lot of damage from Boba Fett's flamethrower because of his flammable fur coat

* BilingualDialogue: The Sullustans, the Rodians, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 all speak their own respective languages, but that doesn't stop MissionControl from informing you on enemy whereabouts in English. Justified, unless you happen to be in fluent in Wookiee.

* GlassCannon: Jyn Erso has next to no health and dies faster than most heroes. She compensates for this by having the strongest and most spammable short-range attack in the form of her Trunchon Surge and an accurate, powerful laser rifle.

* MadeOfIron: All the Heroes, even if their health varies, can take absurd amounts of punishment ranging from flurries of lightsaber swings to direct fire from [=AT-AT=]s. The only Heroes with excuses are Chewbacca, who's a Wookee, and Vader, who's more machine than man. Everyone else is physically a normal member of their species, so they should die as easily as human, Rodian, or Sullustan foot soldiers do.

** Both R2-D2 and Lando Calrissan have this as one of their abilities, though Lando's variant of the above is not only more powerful, but also disguises itself as a power-up and R2's is a more literal gun.

** Director Krennic can only fire six shots at a time and has only one offensive ability, but his ability to boost the defense of nearby allies and boost his owm defense when in a crowd make him an excellent supportive option.

* WeCannotGoOnWithoutYou: Heroes VS. Villains pits a team three Hero characters and three foot soldiers against an equivalent villainous team. It doesn't matter how well the soldiers play, if their Heroes die, the round ends and the enemy team gets a point.

A sequel only referred as Star Wars Battlefront 2 has been announced for a late-2017 release and will be centered on post-Episode VI content.
