Ring of Pain is a card-based Rogue-like Dungeon Crawler.
The game begins with the player protagonist awaking in a dark and shadowed world in what appears to be a large bower-bird nest. Deciding to explore the nest, the player encounters horrific monsters, and a beckoning voice. Following the voice though a path in the nest, They stumble across Owl Friend. Owl Friend despite his monstrous appearance and is friendly. Owl Friend gifts the player with a candle and leaves them with a cryptic rhyme telling them to fight the dark. The dark however, asserts that Owl Friend is not the friend he appears to be...
The core gameplay consists levels constructed from card. These cards may be monsters, treasures, potions, stat upgrades and at least one path to the next level. These cards are arranged in a ring with the player starting at a random location on the ring. The player must interact with the card on either side of them in a manner which (hopefully) allows them to reach the entrance of the next path, and closer to end of the Ring of Pain. If the player fails to reach the next path, they are killed and sent back to the beginning of the Ring.
* RhymesOnADime: Almost all dialogue is written as rhyming couplets
* FeatheredFiend: The Loombirds are a mid to high level monster that can be encountered deep in the nest. They tend to move around the level looking for the player, and will attack the player even if he does not attack them. They will attack twice if the player does attack them.
Owl Friend despite appearances is a subversion, [as long as he thinks you will kill Shadow for him.]
*GameFace: [Owl Friend will expose his true face if you defy him. That little bird actually a nose, and his sharp toothed mouth is where looked his neck was.]
*PaperThinDisguise: [Owl Friend is actually a loombird, using yellow feathers to make himself more approachable.]
*SuspiciousVideoGameGenerosity: Shadow suggests that Owl Friend's generosity is not motivated by a desire to help the player.
